Gakuen Heaven is Surprisingly Wholesome Despite its Age
Gakuen Heaven is a classic BL series from 2006, following a high school boy named Keita as he enrolls at the prestigious Bell Liberty Academy, an all-boys school for gifted students. Though he considers himself to be nothing more than average, Keita quickly becomes the center of attention at the academy as he catches the eye of some of the most popular boys in school. As he navigates his new school life and searches for his niche, he becomes closer to each of them and even rekindles an old relationship with a long-lost friend.
Despite its age, Gakuen Heaven is a surprisingly wholesome BL series, and the relationships Keita develops with each of the boys are all much healthier than most depicted at the time. Though the series delves into typical harem tropes, Keita’s friendship with each of the boys takes priority. Instead of forcing their feelings onto Keita, they offer him support as he finds his place at school. Gakuen Heaven may be cliché, but it’s a refreshing departure from the usual toxic romances found within 2000s BL anime.

But while its story may not be very long, it packs a great deal of emotion into every episode. The series stars Chiharu Kashima, a young wizard working for the Department of Magic. After a chance encounter, he meets Toyohi Utsumi, who’s always been enamored by the magical world and dreams of being a wizard himself.
As Chiharu and Toyohi spend time together, they find themselves falling hopelessly in love. However, Chiharu struggles to let go of his insecurities, fearing that Toyohi may only love him for his magic. This Boy is a Professional Wizard follows the two as they navigate their relationship and learn to trust in each other. Through their love, Chiharu and Toyohi are able to grow as people, ultimately becoming stronger together. A touching story of love and self-acceptance, This Boy is a Professional Wizard is a must-watch for all BL fans.
Free! Centers Around a Group of Friends in Competitive Swimming

Although Free! technically isn’t a BL series, many fans consider it one. That’s because while none of the characters end up in a relationship, there’s heavy subtext that implies there may be more than friendship between some of them. It’s not uncommon for sports anime to delve into BL themes, especially given their strong emphasis on the bonds between teammates. Free! amps this concept up to new heights, so it’s no wonder it’s become an unofficial BL title.

Romance tends to take a backseat in this series, but the complex relationship between the two men plays a major role throughout the story. The series delves into the complexities of their relationship and how their feelings affect their journey. Wuxian and Wangji are a refreshing couple within the BL sphere, as their feelings come on gradually, making them much more realistic and relatable to fans.

Sk8 the Infinity is one such series that many fans feel is just a step away from becoming a bonafied BL anime. The series follows the adventures of a high school boy named Reki Kyan, who loves skateboarding more than anything in the world. He meets Langa Hasegawa, and the two become best friends. Together, they take on the wild world of skateboarding, making friends, rivals, and competing in races.
Like most sports anime, Sk8 the Infinity has a strong emphasis on friendship and love between teammates. The relationship between Reki and Langa is easily the most important in the series, with most of the story focusing on their growing bond. Though so far their relationship is merely platonic, many fans feel there’s something more between the friends and long to see them finally get together.

From here, they begin navigating a relationship, slowly growing closer the more time they spend together. Twilight Out of Focus is a breath of fresh air within the BL genre. Each relationship featured is compelling and surprisingly realistic, depicting many relatable struggles for high school students when it comes to love and relationships. Over the years, the BL genre has seen more healthy romances, and Twilight Out of Focus is a great example of how far LGBTQ+ representation in anime has come.
