Matt Reeves Reveals First Official Look at The Batman 2

Production has officially begun on The Batman Part II. Director Matt Reeves shared a photo of the first shot as filming got underway. “Here we go..” the director teased, building hype for the highly anticipated sequel.

The photo shows a shot of what looks like a corpse on a morgue slab. Who it is isn’t clear, but it seems likely that a mystery is afoot in Gotham, and only the world’s greatest detective will be able to put it all together. You can take a look at the first shot from The Batman Part 2 below.

In his post, Reeves tags Erik Messerschmidt, who is The Batman Part II‘s cinematographer. He is replacing Greig Fraser, who worked on The Batman.

The Batman Part II Finally Enters Production

The Batman Part II has been one of the most talked about sequels in recent memory. Ever since The Batman opened in 2022, fans have hungrily searched for new stories and rumors about the movie, and voiced concerns and criticisms when it seemed the follow-up was taking longer than expected to materialize. Hopefully, this new shot showing that cameras are finally rowing will help sooth those anxious fans.

However, there are still questions about the plot of The Batman Part II. Earlier today, rumors hit that Sebastian Stan is playing a Batman villain in The Batman Part II, but not the one fans expected. Fans will have to wait a bit longer before having the Marvel star’s DC role confirmed.

After the success of The Batman, Warner Bros. Pictures put a sequel with star Robert Pattinson returning as Batman and Reeves directing into development. Despite the quick decision on Warner’s part, The Batman: Part II is a sequel years in the making, and won’t debut until 2027.

Some of that is due to the 2023 Hollywood strike, but there was also speculation that Reeves, who is also co-wrote the sequel with Mattson Tomlin, was slow to turn in the script. There was also discussion that the movie may have been in trouble after James Gunn and Peter Saffran launched DC Studios and the new DC Universe, with its own Batman, but those theories have been proven true. Instead, The Batman Part II is now filming at Studios Leavesden.

The Batman Part II is the third installment in a DC franchise called “The Batman Epic Crime Universe.” In between the two The Batman movies, HBO released the spinioff series The Penguin, which bridges the gap between the two movies. Another report today claims The Penguin will not recieve a second season.

The Batman — Part II‘s cast is led by Robert Pattinson returning as Bruce Wayne, with Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Jayme Lawson as Mayor Bella Reál, and Gil Perez-Abraham as GCPD officer Martinez, all also returning from The Batman. Newcomers to the sequel’s cast include Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Scarlett Johansson, and Sebastian Koch.

The Batman Part II opens in theaters on Oct. 1, 2027.
