Resident Evil Veronica Behind Closed Doors Details

Resident Evil Veronica managed to blow the doors off of the Summer Game Fest Opening Night Live event. As you might have guessed, it’s the long-rumored remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, which is one of the most beloved entries in this already storied franchise.

Featuring fan-favorite Claire Redfield, it takes place on a deadly island with tons of twists and turns, and really puts Claire through a trial by fire. Even though it’s not a numbered entry, many fans treat it as such and constantly reference it throughout its runtime. It’s also notable for originally releasing on the Dreamcast before any other console.

Now, Claire will return in remake form, and although a lot of details are still under wraps, we got the chance to talk to the game’s producer at Summer Game Fest in a behind-closed-doors Q&A.

Third-Person Confirmed For Resident Evil Veronica

After months and months of a rumored existence, the Resident Evil – Code: Veronica remake is now finally official. Except this time, it’s simply called Resident Evil Veronica, which producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi says is an homage to recent Resident Evil titles, which sometimes use a “deliberate one-word subtitle,” like “Requiem.”

Hirabayashi notes that this is “just as important as a numbered title,” especially as it pertains to Claire’s story. It’s going to take place “three months” after the events of Resident Evil 2, so Hirabayashi stresses that Claire is not going to be some sort of special forces powerhouse like Leon Kennedy.

In fact, Hirabayashi was pretty open about the game feeling “similar to Resident Evil 2” in terms of gameplay, and also hinted that it will primarily take place from a third-person perspective. Although things could change between now and the eventual 2027 release, it seems like it’s going to be more of a traditional Resident Evil compared to Requiem, which offered first-person gameplay and Leon’s power fantasy antics.

We Know What Team Is Handling This Remake

Resident Evil Veronica is being handled by the Resident Evil 2 and 4 remake team, which is good news given that those are pretty universally celebrated. As expected, it will “maintain continuity” with the other remakes.

Remember, this remake is aiming for “modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and vividly detailed graphics.” That middle part is especially important, as many details could change, including the presentation of the antagonists. Nothing was confirmed during the closed-door Q&A about Albert Wesker, who plays a huge role in Code: Veronica.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see many new scenes pop up, including rumors that Chris will have a more active role in the game (he was playable in the original). Resident Evil Veronica is due out on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2 in 2027.
