In the Transformers franchise, the usual factions include the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, with these two groups waging battl since 1984. Their ranks include powerful robots such as Optimus Prime, Megatron and many others. However, there are several Transformers who aren’t in either of these factions, and they’re some of the most powerful robots in disguise of them all.
Be they Maximals, Predacons or anything else, some of the strongest robots in the Transformers franchise have no real ties to the Autobot or Decepticon factions. These characters are spread across the multiverse, with some of them appearing rarely, while others have numerous incarnations.
Jhiaxus Represented a Dark New Generation of Transformers
Jhiaxus was the primary villain of the Marvel Transformers: Generation 2 comic book, but he technically wasn’t a Decepticon. Instead, he was part of a “second generation” of Cybertronians who had broken away from the war and its allegiances. In many ways, Jhiaxus’ design was similar to the Decepticon Seeker jets, but he was far more vicious and brutal than the treacherous coward Starscream.
Jhiaxus could transform into a powerful Cybertronian jet, with this speed bolstering his fighting capabilities. He was also extremely intelligent, having access to all kinds of technology, including cloning. Other iterations gave him the power to scan others and modify his body to match their weapons, giving him a major edge in battle.
Magmatron Combined Three Beasts in One
Magmatron was the central Predacon commander in the anime Beast Wars Neo: Super-Lifeform Transformers, but he was quite different from his soldiers. Whereas the Maximals and other Predacons all had one beast mode, Magmatron had multiple. His robot mode could split into three different dinosaurs, with these also able to combine into a chimera creature known as the Magmasaurus.
Armed with hip-mounted blasters, a savage blade and a shield, his robot mode is extremely tall and powerful. Likewise, he can split his spark and consciousness across his three beast modes, allowing him to operate with much greater independence than other Beast Warriors. While not the strongest Predacon of them all, he’s certainly one of the toughest.
Big Convoy was a One-Maximal Army
The venerated Big Convoy was the leader of a rag-tag group of Maximals in Beast Wars Neo, but he wanted nothing to do with them. This sense of being on his own was more than justified, as his massive wooly mammoth mode belied a powerful robot mode loaded with weapons. These included the Big Cannon that was formed by his beast mode head, hip blasters and tonfas that jutted from his arms.
Like other Maximal commanders in the tradition of Autobots like Optimus Prime, Big Convoy had his own energon Matrix based on the Matrix of Leadership. This granted him even more resources to draw from, and it could be combined with his Big Cannon to take on threats such as Unicron himself.
Robots in Disguise Had the Most Versatile Megatron
Transformers: Robots in Disguise had its own Predacon version of Megatron, though he was known as Gigatron in Japan. This incarnation had more alternate modes than any other Emperor of Destruction, with these ranging from a robot and a dragon to a bat, a jet, a giant claw and a car. Stronger than almost any other Transformer in this continuity, his primary weapons besides his own strength were energy blasts in robot mode and fire breath in his multiple beast modes.
This take on Megatron could actually drain the energy from other Cybertronians, to the point of absorbing their own sparks. Despite this, he usually left the dirty work to the Predacons and even the Decepticon Commandos who worked under him, only getting involved in battles on occasion. When he was upgraded into Galvatron, he gained more power and additional alternate modes.
Beast Galvatron was Briefly Empowered by the Chaos Bringer
Beast Wars II: Super-Lifeform Transformers was the first anime of the Beast Era, and much as this period in the franchise had its own Megatron separate from the original, it had its own Galvatron. This Predacon Emperor of Destruction was more versatile compared to his minions, who had either beast modes or vehicle modes, as he could transform from a robot into both a mighty dragon and a drill tank. Fast and devastating in either form, only the might of Maximals such as Leo Prime/Lio Convoy stand a possible chance directly against him.
Beast Galvatron could also absorb the energy of others and even turn that energy into destructive blasts. Other weapons include his tail blade, wing cutters and his own Galva-Matrix. He gained his most powerful form, however, when his body was possessed by the evil Unicron, giving him truly cosmic abilities.
Thundertron Isn’t Even a Cybertronian
Thundertron debuted in the Aligned Continuity, namely the works tied to Transformers: Prime, and while he transformed from a robot into a robotic alien lion, he wasn’t a true “Transformer.” His world was one of many that had once been colonized by Cybertronians, and this gave him an innate hatred of both Autobots and Decepticons.
One of the intergalactic Star Seeker pirates, his durability has allowed him to survive countless encounters with these would-be invaders. Thundertron is incredibly skilled in battle and wields a sword in robot mode, with his beast mode claws being extremely sharp against even the toughest metals.
He’s also particularly fast in beast mode, slashing and biting enemies in record time. Along with these martial abilities is the genius intellect of a brilliant tactician, and the durability to survive even the worst skirmishes.
Optimal Optimus was Several Leaders in One
Optimal Optimus was the third form of Maximal leader Optimus Primal, who himself was a descendant of Autobot leader Optimus Prime. When Primal temporarily housed the spark and the Matrix of Leadership of the Autobot in his own body following a failed assassination attempt, his body was mutated into a gigantic, Autobot-sized form that heavily resembled Generation 1 Optimus Prime.
Now towering over other Beast Warriors, he could easily dish out more than enough firepower to defeat his enemies, while just as easily surviving their attacks. Optimal Optimus could transform from a gorilla into a robot, a car and a jet, with a massive cannon being in his robot mode chest.
While bearing the Matrix, he was also seemingly possessed by the spirit of Optimus Prime, even commanding his Maximals to “transform and roll out.” Other powers include the ability to create force fields and fly at Mach 7 in jet mode, with only the power of Transmetal II Megatron coming close to matching his.
The Fallen was One of the First Primes
“The Fallen” was one of the original 13 Transformers created by Primus to combat the evil Unicron, but unfortunately, this robot (also known as Megatronus Prime) fell to the sway of the Chaos Bringer. Due to this corruption, his dark powers are many, including the ability to teleport and use telekinesis to manipulate gravity and surrounding energy.
Usually portrayed as transforming into a Cybertronian tank, he has also been given a Cybertronian jet alternate mode. While he is in some continuities a legendary influence on the Decepticon faction, The Fallen is not a Decepticon and existed long before the factional divide between the robots of Cybertron.
His robot mode is sometimes shown as having a flaming head, tying him further to his dark power source. He can even sometimes travel throughout the multiverse, aiding his master Unicron on missions to other realities that they seek to conquer and destroy.
Unicron is the Greatest Evil in the Transformers Universe
Long before there were Autobots and Decepticons, there was Primus and Unicron, with the latter being the chaos-bringing devil figure to his more heroic “god of light” brother. Transforming into a massive robotic planet, Unicron debuted in The Transformers: The Movie, though it was the comics that fleshed him out.
Able to withstand incredible amounts of force and respond accordingly through sheer size and cosmic strength alone, Unicron’s power can also bolster that of other Transformers. Unicron’s heralds are usually reformatted by his dark energy, with an example being Megatron turning into Galvatron.
Given cosmic awareness and internal systems dedicated to consuming all in his path, this is a being of pure destruction and hatred. Only the power of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership can even potentially stop him.
Primus can Light the Transformers’ Darkest Hour
Primus is the creator of the Cybertronian race, with his alternate mode being the planet Cybertron itself. Able to create robots from his very metallic skin, his spark is usually connected to the Vector Sigma computer, birthing new Transformers into the modern era.
As cosmically-empowered as his brother, Primus is easily the strongest being in the Transformers franchise. Though he is heroic, he isn’t necessarily an Autobot, though some continuities have given him temporary bodies based on Autobots such as Rodimus Prime.
His only drawback is that the constant fighting on the surface of his planet mode has drained his energon reserves, usually causing him to go into dormancy. Along with previous Autobot leaders, Primus’ very essence can be reached through the Matrix, even if he isn’t a true Autobot.
