Margot Robbie isn’t easily stopped, if at all, when she sets her gaze upon a project. The award-winning actress and Academy Award nominee is hellbent on seeing her Ocean’s Eleven prequel film materialize, and she’s back on the right track after the project suffered a major loss recently.
The Ocean’s Eleven prequel project, something Robbie is working on alongside fellow Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper, lost its director, Lee Isaac Chung (Twisters, The Mandalorian), after Chung parted ways with Warner Bros. and left the project over what was reported to be creative differences.
“Lee Isaac is a singular filmmaking talent whose vision and partnership have been invaluable to Warner Bros. and LuckyChap throughout this journey,” Warner Bros. said in an official statement following the split. “Our experience with him has only deepened our enthusiasm to collaborate on future projects together.”
Margot Robbie’s Ocean’s Eleven Prequel Eyeing Top Star
Cooper is now directing the film along with writing the screenplay and, a little more than three months later, Robbie’s Ocean’s Eleven prequel is on the verge of landing a sizable victory as far as casting goes.
Wagner Moura is reportedly in negotiations, per Variety, to join the cast in a currently unnamed role. He would be a huge get for Robbie and Cooper, an Oscar nominee and Golden Globe award-winner who made quite the name for himself in his portrayal of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar in 2015’s Narcos for Netflix.
It bears mentioning that Moura became the first Brazilian actor ever nominated for the Best Actor award at The Oscars for his role in Civil War, also making history by winning a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama as three different characters in the crime thriller Secret Agent— Marcelo Alves, Armando Solimões and Fernando Solimões. He is currently set for multiple projects going forward, including The Last House, a sci-fi horror film set to terrify Netflix audiences on August 7, 2026.
What is Margot Robbie’s Ocean’s Eleven Prequel About?
“Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows — his parents,” Robbie said when teasing the film. “You’ll see them in their prime, and in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.”
Needless to say, the bar is set sky-high for anyone attempting to delve into the Ocean’s universe. The original film, Ocean’s 11 (not the numerical style used), that debuted in 1960, featured none other than Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and The Rat Pack faction. The remake in 2001, Ocean’s Eleven (not the long-form spelling of the number) had an equally unreal ensemble cast that included George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia and the late, great Bernie Mac.
Clooney is also set to begin filming Ocean’s 14 in 2026, reuniting with much of the original cast.
This is the lore (read: the standard) that Robbie is up against with her prequel, but given her resume and talents, nobody in their right mind would doubt her ability to make this film a gem.
