Final Fantasy 16 Is Officially Free for Millions of Gamers

The first mainline Final Fantasy of the PlayStation 5 generation is now available for free to millions of players worldwide, as Final Fantasy 16 reaches its largest potential audience to date, especially given its poor sales figures.

Final Fantasy 16 is an action RPG in the same vein as the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. The player takes on the role of Clive Rosfield, a warrior whose younger brother has inherited the power of the Phoenix. One fateful day, Clive is granted the power of Ifrit and loses control, slaying his brother and kicking off an adventure in which nations throw their summon-monster-infused soldiers against each other in a bid for power.

Final Fantasy 16 started as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, so it’s only fitting that it arrives on PlayStation Plus. The PlayStation Blog announced that Final Fantasy 16 will be available to PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers on June 16, 2026. However, it’s only the base version of the game and doesn’t include The Echoes of the Fallen or The Rising Tide DLC expansions.

Final Fantasy 16 isn’t the only title coming to PlayStation Plus Extra in June 2026, as Sonic X Shadow Generations, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, Farming Simulator 25, Blades of Fire, and Black Desert are launching throughout the month. Those who subscribe to PlayStation Plus Premium will also gain access to Gitaroo Man.

Final Fantasy 16 Is An Awesome Game (With Too Much Of Eorzea Inside It)

Final Fantasy 16 is an awesome game, and one that was cruelly overlooked by the gaming public, as reflected by its dire sales on PC. The reason for this could be due to how different it is from the standard Final Fantasy experience, with only a single playable character and an action RPG system that’s far closer to Devil May Cry than the old turn-based games. It didn’t help that many reviewers slammed the game for its poor side quests that felt like busywork, likely due to the game being developed by the same team behind Final Fantasy 14.

Those who didn’t want to drop the cash on Final Fantasy 16 in the past should check it out on PlayStation Plus Extra. It has a great story and an excellent voice cast, with a combat system that constantly evolves as the player adds new summon monster abilities to their arsenal. Final Fantasy 16 might be different from the classic 16 and 32-bit Final Fantasy titles, but it stands on its own as an excellent action game.
