The Strongest Transformers in the Franchise, Ranked

Some Transformers are stronger than others, regardless of the power-ups they achieve. Even the most unlikely alternate modes unfold to unleash some of the universe’s toughest Robots in Disguise. This includes familiar Autobots and Decepticons in addition to the deities seen in the Transformers Universe.

These Transformers boast immense physical power and incredible techniques, making them indispensable on the battlefield. Others combine the strength of multiple Cybertronians into one unit, creating terrifying “gestalts.” When power isn’t enough, size more than makes up for it, with some of the strongest Transformers also being the biggest.

Updated by Harley Whisenhunt on June 11, 2026: Across different universes, some Transformers have been capable of truly spectacular feats. Whether combiners or Cybertronians using other, more dangerous technology, the most powerful Transformers can take down multiple enemies with zero help. These Transformers can turn the tide of battle almost by themselves. This list has been updated to reflect CBR’s updated publishing standards.

Superion Became The Autobots’ First Combiner

The Autobots’ first combiner, Superion was created from Optimus Prime working with Vector Sigma to create more members of their group. Consisting of the five Aerialbots, Superion also offered the Autobots some crucial air support at a time when most of the Autobots were ground-based. Though Superion is supposed to be the opposite number of the Decepticon gestalt Menasor, the Autobots use him to help them with any situation requiring battling combiners or other massive foes.

Though he starts inexperienced, he tries to make up for his lack of battle knowledge with a single-minded focus on wiping out the Decepticons. This can be a double-edged sword, making it too hard for him to focus on the larger aspects of a mission. This leaves him stuck at the bottom of the list, though he’s still a massive aid to the Autobots. However, Superion went on to help the Autobots through their battle against Megatron and continued into the fight against Scorponok in Transformers: Headmasters.

Thunderwing’s Outer Shell Makes Him Invulnerable

Originally a scientist, Thunderwing was the first to notice the damage being caused to Cybertron by the Autobots and Decepticons’ battles. His explanations were ignored when he tried to warn everyone as the war continued. Eventually, he decided to create some new technology in the hopes of helping them survive the destruction. Thunderwing created a special organic shell that covered his robotic body— the Pretender technology — to help them prepare.

The technology worked, making Thunderwing powerful enough to withstand any environment, but also destroyed the rest of his mind. In Transformers: Stormbringer, Thunderwing battled both the Decepticons and the Autobots without either group doing damage to him. Even in the battles he lost, Thunderwing’s enemies always felt more like they got lucky rather than actually developing a way to stop him.

Armada’s Optimus Prime Merged With Jetfire to Forge Jet Optimus

After a mission led by Jetfire, Optimus’ second-in-command, went sideways, Optimus goes in to rescue him. Though Optimus was already hurt, he revealed that he planned to combine with Jetfire to boost their powers. As “Jet Optimus,” Prime gained the power of flight but also wielded Jetfire’s giant hand cannon as his primary weapon.

In Jet Optimus’s first appearance, he shuts down Megatron and several of his troops without help from the other Autobots. That said, that’s also not the extent of his power. When he needs additional firepower, he can call on the power of Overload, which is an extension of his trailer. Overload’s power grants Optimus Jet two enormous shoulder-mounted cannons, making him one of the Autobots’ best weapons.

Ultra Magnus Is One of Optimus’ Most Loyal Lieutenants

Ultra Magnus is one of Optimus’ most trusted lieutenants, often serving as his second-in-command in many continuities. He ran Autobot City on Earth in the original Generation One timeline while Optimus continued the war against the Decepticons elsewhere. Moreover, he briefly led the Autobots after they lost Optimus Prime in his last battle with Megatron.

While he never became the Autobots’ official leader, Ultra Magnus repeatedly proved himself on missions. During Transformers: Headmasters, he even proved capable of battling evenly with one of the most powerful Decepticon soldiers, Sixshot. Later, in Transformers: Legends, Ultra Magnus was even capable of taking on Megatron from two different timelines.

Victorion Follows The Mistress of The Flame

From the planet Camien, Victorion is a combiner of six devout followers of the Mistress of the Flame, led by Pyra Magna. All of Pyra’s partners are Torchbearers like her, and they share a unified goal that allows them to think clearly as a combiner. Neutral towards the idea of war, it doesn’t take long before she’s pulled into battle to help the Autobots.

Victorion is one of the newer combiners, but she’s already seen plenty of combat. Alongside Optimus himself, Victorion has come out on top against enemies like Galvatron, Soundwave, and those outside the Transformers universe, like the enemies of MASK and even the G.I. Joe. She hopes she will eventually control the Matrix, but until she does, she’s satisfied with following Optimus Prime into battle.

Brawn Is a Small But Powerful Autobot

As his name suggests, Brawn has great physical power despite his small frame. One of the G1 “Mini-Bots,” he could easily take on enemies larger than himself. This made him far more useful than other Transformers in his size class. The series Transformers: Animated briefly showcased him to accentuate these elements. That separate continuity made him stronger than Bulkhead, even though he was smaller than the fan-favorite Autobot Bumblebee.

Sadly, this level of power wasn’t enough to save him from a bloodthirsty Megatron and his Decepticon hordes. Ambushed by some of the strongest Decepticons, Brawn and several other Autobots were killed at the beginning of The Transformers: The Movie. Thus, while he’s quite tough, he still has his limits.

Ironhide Is Always Ready to Bust Some Deceptichops

Ironhide is often portrayed as Optimus Prime’s right-hand robot, and for good reason. Tough, gruff and just mean enough, Ironhide is hardened by countless battles against Decepticons and is never against engaging in more of them. He’s sometimes portrayed as having massive arm cannons (as in the live-action Transformers movies), though G1 made his weapon of choice a liquid nitrogen dispenser.

This battle-ready attitude is somewhat the opposite of Ratchet, who usually shares a body style with Ironhide. Both physically strong and a great marksman, Ironhide’s power allows him to take the fight to the Decepticons. Of course, if they happen to gang up on or ambush him, he’s as vulnerable as anyone else.

Optimal Optimus Combines the Strongest Maximal & Autobot

Optimus Primal was the Maximal descendant of Optimus Prime, with the bestial robot transforming into a gorilla instead of a truck. During the third season of Beast Wars: Transformers, however, he was forced to unite with the spark of his ancestor. This came after the Predacon version of Megatron attempted to assassinate a dormant Prime and change history. Mutating into “Optimal Optimus,” this ultimate form of the Maximal leader was far larger than the other combatants of the Beast Wars.

Now equipped with Autobot-level strength and resistance, he could fight off the Predacons more easily than ever. He was also a lot larger and now had four separate modes. Best of all, his new Autobot-inspired body had the fuel efficiency of a Maximal, allowing him to take on Predacons or even Decepticons for as long as he needed to.

Jetfire Is One of the Most Iconic Transformers Autobots

Though he usually starts as a Decepticon, Jetfire tends to find his way onto the Autobot team. Sometimes known as “Skyfire” in the original Transformers cartoon, he’s one of the few Autobots that can fly. He also has an especially tall robot mode, and when combined with his scientific mind, the classic version of Jetfire is the perfect mix of brawn and brains.

Other versions of Jetfire can even combine with Optimus Prime, with this concept introduced in Transformers: Armada. In almost every continuity, his command of the air vastly outranked Seekers such as Starscream. He also survived in stasis after seemingly dying when he crashed on Earth, making him one resilient Autobot and one of the strongest Transformers.

Grimlock Is the Mighty King of the Dinobots

The leader of the animalistic Dinobot faction and a popular character ever since Generation 1, Grimlock is known for his tyrannosaurus alternate mode and fittingly fierce attitude. He’s extremely tough in both forms and can even breathe fire in beast mode. What he generally lacks in intellect, he more than makes up for in power.

In most continuities, Grimlock is easily one of the strongest Transformers. He’s usually portrayed as being at least as strong as powerhouse Transformers like Optimus Prime, Jetfire, and Megatron. Unlike the Autobot leader, Grimlock can fly without any outside assistance, making him even more of an asset.
