Yesterday celebrated the 8-year anniversary of the first time we received news of The Elder Scrolls VI. Announced back in 2018, The Elder Scrolls VI is set to mark the next installment in The Elder Scrolls franchise, 15-years after the last mainline entry, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
However, with the first and only reveal for The Elder Scrolls VI taking place almost a decade ago, and with there being no news, trailers, or even hints of a release window since, it is safe to say that fans are not feeling hopeful when it comes to Bethesda’s progress. Not only that, but things got even worse back in April when Bethesda head Todd Howard himself admitted that The Elder Scrolls VI was indeed announced too soon. “Just pretend we didn’t announce it. Doesn’t exist,” Howard said when asked about TES VI in an interview with IGN.
Now, a few months on from Howard’s wild revelation, the Bethesda head is back, but this time, things are sounding a lot more hopeful.
According to Xbox Chief Content Officer for The Elder Scrolls VI, Matt Booty, (via Variety), they had the following to say: “Having visited Bethesda and sat with Todd and seen Elder Scrolls playing, it looks amazing, and it’s coming along well. And we’ll make sure to announce it and really reveal it at the right time.”
When the right time will be, however, is another question entirely, but it is at least reassuring to finally hear a positive update when it comes to the development of The Elder Scrolls VI. Now, we can only hope that it will launch before 2030.
In the meantime, news of Booty’s latest update was soon shared across social media, and fans were quick to share their thoughts on the news over on r/TESVI. “Honestly, this is the closest we’ve got to actually getting any kind of news in days or even weeks,” the top comment reads, mirroring my thoughts exactly. “They looked at this subreddit and realized they might need to throw us a bone,” another joked.
There is no doubt that this update comes as the result of the latest Xbox Games Showcase which, despite presenting many Bethesda games such as Fallout 76 and DOOM, there was no news about The Elder Scrolls VI, causing fans to feel outraged.
However, one user over on Reddit was feeling a lot more optimistic about the whole ordeal, sharing, “This is one of the rare instances where I’m glad I’m older. Time flies by more the older I get. I was in my mid-teens when Daggerfall released, so the six or so years from it to Morrowind was torture. Whereas, the 15 years since Skyrim doesn’t seem as long to me. For those who were like 12 when Skyrim released, I’m sure it seems like a century. This is an era though where there are far more choices in games to keep you occupied while you wait.”
It is true that plenty of incredible games have been released and will continue to release before the launch of The Elder Scrolls VI, but in the meantime, we can only hope that this latest update is enough to keep fans satiated… for now.
