Crime thrillers deliver some of the most engrossing and memorable movies, and the 2007 neo-Western crime thriller, No Country for Old Men, is no exception. The film was a critical and commercial success, and is now available to stream for free on Pluto TV.
No Country for Old Men was written, directed, produced, and edited by the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen. It is an adaptation of the 2005 novel of the same name, written by Cormac McCarthy. Set in 1980 West Texas, No Country for Old Men follows the lives of three different men, exploring themes of fate and conscience.
No Country for Old Men Is the Coen Brothers’ Magnum Opus
Joel and Ethan Coen are known for their unique filmmaking style that spans multiple genres, but often subvert parody and deal with similar themes. Some of their most acclaimed movies include Miller’s Crossing, Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and True Grit. However, No Country for Old Men is, for many fans and critics, the Coen Brothers’ magnum opus.
No Country for Old Men features a star-studded ensemble cast and follows the lives of Vietnam War veteran Llewelyn Moss, played by Josh Brolin, hitman Anton Chigurh, played by Javier Bardem, and sheriff Ed Tom Bell, played by Tommy Lee Jones. The neo-Western crime thriller also starred Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, and Stephen Root, among others.
The story follows Llewelyn as he stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong and finds a briefcase containing $2 million in cash. Hitman Anton Chigurh is hired to recover the money that Llewelyn found, while Terrell County Sheriff Ed Tom Bell investigates the drug deal. No Country for Old Men grossed $171.6 million against a $25 million budget and received critical acclaim.
No Country for Old Men Has a Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
The Coen brothers’ neo-Western crime thriller is considered one of the best movies of the 21st century. On Rotten Tomatoes, No Country for Old Men holds an impressive 93% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score based on critics’ reviews, and an 86% Popcornmeter score based on audiences’ reviews. On IMDb, the film has an 8.2 rating based on more than a million reviews.
Richard Schickel from TIME Magazine wrote, “The Coens are wintry and dead calm ironists, and their movie is finally less an assault on our sensibilities than a subtle — and possibly permanent insinuation into our consciousnesses.” Meanwhile, Lou Lumenick from the New York Post said, “No Country for Old Men is the first movie I’ve seen in a very long while that deserves to be called a masterpiece.”
No Country for Old Men received 8 Academy Award nominations, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Javier Bardem, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also earned multiple other awards and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. And now that the Coen Brothers’ magnum opus has joined the Pluto TV catalog, it’s a must-watch.
