Ahead of the 20th anniversary of Assassin’s Creed next year, the franchise is wrapping up its current era. While fans await more titles in the future of the video game series, they can prepare to say goodbye to the latest mainline entry, Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Released in 2025, Assassin’s Creed Shadows finally took players to feudal Japan. The game’s journey is now heading towards its sunset, as the developers announced that one last update, dubbed Version 1.1.11, will be applied to the title on June 16. A very brief teaser was included to help promote the update, but there wasn’t any additional information yet shared about what this final addition will bring. Some fans have responded by expressing disappointment that there won’t be any more updates to come for Assassin’s Creed Shadows after this month.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Gets One Last Update
“Honestly a shame,” one fan on X writes. “Gameplay wise this entry was great. It should have had at least the same level of support as Valhalla. With some extra story DLC it could have really stuck the landing.”
Another post reads, “No further expansions? No fully exploring the wonderful myths and Yokai, like you did for Myths/Legends in Ragnarok expansion (WHICH THIS SETTING IS RIPE FOR?!). No rumored co-op (which would’ve been awesome). Overall, honestly, it feels like Shadows was dropped by the wayside and one of the settings with THE most potential as far as Assassins/Shinobi was just squandered. Absolute missed potential.”
By and large, Assassin’s Creed Shadows was a success. It managed to reach more than a million players on its release date, and would become one of the year’s best-selling titles. The reviews were mostly positive, with many players giving Ubisoft credit for finally taking the series to Japan during the Sengoku period.
More Assassin’s Creed Games Take Priority
Still, it would seem that the Assassin’s Creed team will be putting all of their focus into the franchise’s upcoming projects by shelving Shadows. The next major entry will be Assassin’s Creed Hexe, a narrative-driven game set during the witch hunts of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries. An official release date has not yet been announced, but reports suggest it is likely to arrive sometime in 2027. It was formally announced in 2022 and has already spent several years in development.
Before then, players can look forward to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, an updated version of the fourth mainline game, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, from 2013. Because Black Flag has long been one of the most beloved installments of the franchise, there’s a lot of hype for the Resynced version heading into its release. It’s probable that Ubisoft is diverting resources from the future of Shadows to focus more on the launch and support of the Black Flag remake. It will be dropping on July 9 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC.
