Stranger Things Creators’ Paramount Event Movie Gets Official Release Date

Paramount has given a date for its upcoming ‘event film’ from the Duffer Brothers. Details about the mystery project largely remain under wraps for now.

Deadline reports that the currently untitled film will have a theatrical release on Nov. 3, 2028. The Duffer Bros. are set to direct it from their own script, but other details have not been shared at this time. This marks the first update regarding the project since the brothers announced in August 2025 that they were moving from Netflix to Paramount with a four-year exclusive deal for film, TV and streaming. It also signals a larger push from Paramount, who is able to draw in artists from their rival, allowing them to create work that can secure theatrical releases — something Netflix has largely avoided in favor of streaming.

Stranger Things & Wicked Creatives Headline Paramount’s New Era

The Duffer Brothers are certainly in good company with their recent move to Paramount. Other deals from the studio following its Skydance merger included director James Mangold (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Ford v Ferrari) as well as Wicked’s Jon M. Chu. Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios also secured a multi-picture first-look deal with Paramount, with Smith reportedly attached to star in some franchise-starting projects.

Outside theatrical-focused projects, the Duffers will also be reunited with some of the team behind the success of Stranger Things over at Paramount’s streaming department. Cindy Holland and Matt Thunnell, executives who helped launch Stranger Things to worldwide acclaim, are now the Chair of Direct-to-Consumer and President of Paramount Television, respectively.

The ‘event’ movie is certainly being teased as a massive project that warrants secrecy, and it will have big shoes to fill following the recent conclusion of Stranger Things, which the Duffer Brothers served as creators, executive producers, writers and directors on. The two also helmed the franchise’s animated TV spin-off, Tales from ’85, which premiered on April 23 and already has a Season 2 order.

The new Paramount event project will also mark the brothers’ second foray into film, with their last movie being 2015’s Hidden — a psychological thriller starring Alexander Skarsgård that sees a couple living inside a fallout shelter and facing an unknown threat terrorizing them from the outside. Looking at the Duffer Brothers’ filmography, it’s highly likely that their upcoming Paramount film will have some supernatural, sci-fi or horror elements to it.

The Stranger Things Spin-Off Already Secured a Season 2 Deal

It may be the end of an era for Netflix and the Duffer Brothers, but the Stranger Things franchise is still likely to be churning out new content in the future. In addition to a new season of Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, a live-action spin-off is reportedly still in development, though the Paramount deal might complicate its future.

Stranger Things‘ final episode aired on Netflix on Dec. 31, 2025, marking the end of a nearly 10-year-long run for the hit sci-fi horror series. Unfortunately for fans who waited years for new episodes, the show’s ending proved to be divisive, and Season 5 sits at a 52% approval rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes — a much weaker reception than the previous seasons, which hovered around 90–95% approval.

The Duffer Bros.’ ‘event film’ with Paramount will be released on Nov. 3, 2028.
