Shrek 5 Unveils New Trailer 1 Year Ahead of Release

More than a year after the first Shrek 5 teaser trailer broke the internet (for all the wrong reasons), another trailer has arrived. While last year’s teaser only revealed the updated character designs and Zendaya’s casting, the new trailer actually lets audiences in on what the animated sequel will be about.

Shrek and Donkey Are Back With Another Adventure

While plot details still remain under wraps, the new teaser makes it clear that Shrek and Donkey will be going on another adventure in Shrek 5. While Donkey is excited, believing he needs a makeover before it can happen, Shrek tries his hardest to stop his donkey best friend from calling whatever they are about to embark on an “adventure.”

Along for the ride are Shrek’s wife Fiona and their two teenage sons, Fergus and Farkle. Unfortunately, by the end of the trailer, the five are shown in jail. It’s unclear what has led the family to be jailed, although that will surely be revealed in future marketing.

The trailer also features a Frozen reference. As Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey make their way down a sketchy part of a village, a snowman, clearly a nod to Frozen‘s Olaf, asks Shrek and Fiona if they “wanna date a snowman?”, the sequel’s play on the popular “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” song from the 2013 Disney movie.

Gingerbread Man, a.k.a. Gingy, is also back, with the trailer showing that he has become “caked up like a friggin’ bakery” in the years since fans last saw the character. Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter, Felicia, can also be seen in the teaser, although after making such a big announcement out of Zendaya’s casting last year, the actor isn’t heard once throughout the 81-second trailer.

The Shrek Franchise Is Officially Back

Following the release of Puss in Boots in 2011, the Shrek franchise went on a hiatus, at least on the film side. While DreamWorks Animation took the franchise to the small screen from 2015 to 2018 with the Netflix animated spinoff The Adventures of Puss in Boots, no new film was released until 2022, when Puss in Boots: The Last Wish hit theaters.

Shrek 5 sees the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz as their respective franchise characters: Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. After being a no-show in the trailer, it doesn’t seem like Antonio Banderas will be back as the swash-buckling feline Puss in Boots, who was seen at the end of The Last Wish returning to the Kingdom of Far Far Away to visit “some old friends.”

Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are co-directing Shrek 5. Both have been part of the franchise since its beginning. Dohrn joined in 2004 as a story artist/writer, serving in that role for Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third. He also voiced Rumpelstiltskin, as well as several other minor characters, in the fourth movie, Shrek Forever After. As for Vernon, he co-directed Shrek 2 and has been the voice of Gingerbread Man since 2001’s Shrek.

By no means does it sound like DreamWorks will be placing the franchise back on ice after Shrek 5. A sixth Shrek movie was recently teased, while an untitled Donkey spinoff is expected to hit theaters in 2028. As for Shrek 5, it will hit theaters on June 30, 2027.
