The Saw franchise is about to come back with a brand-new video game, and it is taking things all the way back to the man who inspired John Kramer.
On June 5, publisher Bloober Team officially unveiled the full preview trailer for their next horror title, Saw: Genesis. The upcoming 3v1 asymmetric horror experience will task three Accused with escaping a series of deadly traps, all of which are being orchestrated by the mysterious Judge watching from the shadows. The most shocking twist of all, however, is that this Judge just so happens to be the man who inspired John Kramer, while the events of Saw: Genesis themselves take place just after the First World War.
Saw: Genesis Is Such a Big Deal for Horror Fans and Gamers Alike
As noted by the official game description for Saw: Genesis from developers Broken Mirror Games and Anshar Studios, the upcoming title takes place “A century before Jigsaw,” a time when “survival demanded sacrifice. Experience the thrilling world of SAW first-hand in a new 3v1 multi-player horror game where three Accused must work together to escape a maze of traps, while one Judge orchestrates their rehabilitation.”
The official game description continues, “Set in the grim aftermath of World War I, Saw: Genesis allows you to play on either side of a 3v1 confrontation in intense matches that take place on procedurally generated maps. Step into the role of the Judge, an early architect of Jigsaw’s philosophy, manipulating the trial and its prisoners from behind the scenes. Or play as one of three Accused looking to escape the deadly labyrinth through teamwork and sacrifice.”
Saw: Genesis will give players a whole host of horrifying ways to cut down the Accused when they take on the role of the Judge, who will have access to everything from hallucinogenic gases and paralytic toxins to a myriad of traps and pitfalls that can be laid out for unwitting victims to stumble upon. Judges will also be able to call upon an Accomplice who can drag captured Accused away for them to escape from their own Rehabilitation Traps.
Players who take on the role of an Accused will have to coordinate with one another, strategize, and frequently sacrifice their own flesh and blood if they want to escape the Judge and his Accomplice with their lives intact. As the timer ticks down and players’ will to live decreases, the game’s difficulty ratchets up, ensuring that any progress they make going forward is more than well deserved.
As exciting as it might be to have another asymmetric horror title on the way, the biggest development of all of this for many fans of the franchise is the introduction of the Judge himself. By introducing a character who not only predates John Kramer’s Jigsaw, but was directly responsible for inspiring his unforgettable series of gruesome crusades, Saw: Genesis has forever altered the landscape of one of the biggest horror franchises of all time.
Saw: Genesis does not currently have a planned release date.
