Samara Weaving’s new crime thriller is garnering attention in the best way.
The Australian actor has quickly become one of Hollywood’s shining stars, thanks to a sea of horror flicks, like the two Ready or Not installments, that earned her the title of scream queen. After she starred in Over Your Dead Body, is not slowing down with her upcoming new movie, Carolina Caroline.
Following its TIFF premiere last year, Weaving’s crime thriller has finally landed in theaters, with critical reception proving strong, with a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, more moviegoers have seen the movie, posting an 82% audience score.
The rating continues a strong streak for Weaving as her last five movies have been received well by audiences, including Over Your Dead Body (77%), Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (89%), and Eenie Meanie (60%). However, with over 50 verified ratings, the score may change over time, as the thriller becomes more accessible in the future.
Carolina Caroline follows a young woman who escapes from a small town in Texas with a charismatic conman and goes on to become a notorious bank robber and a legend in the criminal world. The slick bank heist thriller is peppered with romance and has invited comparisons with genre classics likeTrue Romance.
Carolina Caroline reviewshighlight that the sleek, smart Southern Gothic delivers an engaging tale, makes the most of its talented cast, and tries to put a fresh spin on a genre that is often clichéd or derivative. Weaving and co-star Kyle Gallner have been praised for their central performances, and while the movie has not been a commercial success, so far grossing around $110,000, it’s clear that critical reception has been strong.
As of writing, the new movie is Weaving’s highest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the Oscar-winning masterpiece Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which has a 90% critic score and 84% audience score. It also trumps her breakout movie, the smart horror-comedy Ready or Not, which has a critic score of 89% and an audience score of 78%.
Weaving’s career has grown in stature in recent years, with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come recently enjoying a moderate run at the box office, taking more than $42 million against a budget of $15 million. She is becoming a more prominent star and enjoying the critical acclaim that comes with it.How long Carolina Caroline will continue to post an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score remains to be seen, but it could well stay as Weaving’s highest-rated movie for the foreseeable future.
