It’s Officially The End Of An Era For Zack Snyder’s DCEU After Restore The Snyderverse Campaign

No fan campaign in Hollywood history has quite matched the scale and determination of #RestoreTheSnyderVerse. What started as a push to release Zack Snyder’s Justice League evolved into a years-long effort to continue an entire cinematic universe that had been cut short before its story was complete.

The campaign only intensified after Warner Bros. announced in 2023 that the live-action DCEU would be ending and that a brand-new cinematic universe, the DCU, would be launched under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. For supporters of Zack Snyder’s DC movies, the decision felt like the WB was turning its back on a wealth of untapped potential. Fans fought passionately to keep the DCEU alive and, years later, the movement remains active.

The passion of Synderverse supporters has never been in doubt and is nothing short of remarkable. However, passion alone hasn’t been enough. The success of 2025’s Superman seems to have fully cemented the future of the DCU. What initially felt like a trial run for James Gunn’s new creative vision has become the foundation of a rapidly expanding franchise. For better or worse, it now appears that the Snyderverse chapter of DC’s history has finally reached its conclusion.

James Gunn’s DCU Is Now In Full Swing

When Warner Bros. and DC Studios announced that the DCEU would be replaced by a brand-new continuity, Snyderverse supporters viewed Superman as the make-or-break project. If audiences rejected James Gunn’s take on the last son of Krypton, there was always the possibility that the studio might reconsider its plans. Given the passionate response to Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the continued momentum behind the Restore the Snyderverse campaign, that hope was understandable.

However, the landscape has now changed dramatically. With Supergirl arriving in theaters shortly, Man of Tomorrow already in production, Clayface scheduled for release later this year, and TV shows like Lanterns rapidly approaching, the DCU is no longer a hypothetical roadmap. It is an active franchise that’s growing exponentially. Even former DCEU stars have embraced the transition. Jason Momoa, who previously played Aquaman, is returning to DC as Lobo in Supergirl, highlighting just how complete the reboot has become.

While there may still be a small possibility that the Snyderverse could continue through animation, comics, or other media, the prospect of the live-action DCEU returning now feels more remote than ever. The Restore the Snyderverse movement has still has a lot of momentum, but so has James Gunn’s DCU where it counts (which is at the box office). At this point, all signs suggest that the live-action Snyderverse has reached its final destination, and nothing short of Supergirl or Man of Tomorrow being flops will change that.

The Snyderverse Will Always Be An Important Part Of DC History

The Snyderverse may be over, but nothing the DCU has done or can do will diminish what the DCEU accomplished. There is no denying that Zack Snyder’s era left a lasting impact on DC’s cinematic history. Few superhero franchises have inspired as much passionate engagement as the DCEU did during its peak.

It’s always worth remembering for Snyderverse fans that James Gunn’s DCU is not attempting to replicate it. The two franchises may feature many of the same iconic characters, but their tones and the stories they’re telling feel like polar opposites. Gunn’s Superman and Snyder’s Man of Steel both focus on Superman, but they approach him through entirely different creative lenses. That distinction matters. Fans who connected with Snyder’s storytelling style can still revisit the DCEU, and nothing about the DCU’s success changes what the previous cinematic universe achieved.

Even if the Restore the Snyderverse campaign ultimately failed to achieve its objective, it succeeded in demonstrating the extraordinary connection fans had with the DCEU. Few franchises have inspired such sustained loyalty years after their apparent conclusion. No matter how successful James Gunn’s universe becomes, it will never truly replace what came before. The DCEU occupies its own place in DC history, and that place is secure. The era may be over, but its legacy is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
