4 Square Enix Games Officially Shut Down Next Year

Square Enix is officially delisting four games in 2027, meaning people who paid for the privilege of playing them will no longer be able to do so, and will have to spend money if they want to purchase them again.

In recent years, Square Enix has gained a horrible reputation for game preservation, especially in the mobile sector, with many Final Fantasy titles shutting downand a Kingdom Hearts game not even making it out of the playtesting phase. As such, fans have been wary of any game that doesn’t come on a cartridge or a CD, as Square Enix’s digital-only titles tend to vanish into thin air.

The Kingdom Hearts series is losing more games, at least on one platform. Square Enix has announced that four games can no longer be purchased and will only remain active until next year. These titles are: Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX – Cloud Version, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue Cloud Version, Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind (DLC) Cloud Version, and Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece for Cloud.

The four cloud-based Kingdom Hearts games will remain playable to those who purchased them until 14:59 UTC on Wednesday, June 9, 2027. As these games require streaming cloud-based tech to run, they will no longer be functional on the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. Those who purchased the games won’t receive a refund, and the programs will be worthless.

Square Enix is discontinuing these games because all the Kingdom Hearts titles are coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026, with Kingdom Hearts 4 launching on the system later. The remastered versions of the original trilogy and their DLC content are being bundled together as Kingdom Hearts Collection [1-3]. As the games will be playable on Nintendo Switch 2, there’s no need for the streaming versions.

It’s not all doom and gloom for the people who purchased the Kingdom Hearts cloud versions on Nintendo Switch & Switch 2, as they’ll be given a discount on the digital versions of the upcoming releases. According to the Nintendo eShop, if someone owns all three of the cloud games, they’ll be given a 50% discount on Kingdom Hearts Collection [1-3].

It’s frustrating that people who purchased the Nintendo Switch Kingdom Hearts games are losing access to them unless they pay more money, and fans really need to kick up a fuss, rather than be happy with needing to pay more to use content they already purchased. This is why the Stop Killing Games movement exists, and why digital ownership is even more crucial in an era of live service graveyards and cartridges that only contain digital licenses.
