Against all odds, one of this year’s most critically panned video game adaptations is surging in popularity. Just months after a catastrophic release, Return to Silent Hill is dominating the streaming charts.
The 2026 video game adaptation is the king of Hulu in a surprise turn of events. According to FlixPatrol, Return to Silent Hill is currently the platform’s No. 1 most-streamed movie in the United States, rising a staggering nine places from its debut at No. 10 on June 13. It beats out other favorite films, including Sam Raimi’s survivalist thriller, Send Help, and Toy Story, ahead of its upcoming sequel.
Return to Silent Hill Was One of 2026’s Worst Video Game Adaptations
2026 has largely been a great year for video game adaptations. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie shattered box office records, Iron Lung was a surprise indie hit, and Mortal Kombat II finally realized the franchise’s full potential. On the horizon are plenty of other exciting adaptations, including a new Resident Evil movie and Street Fighter. However, Return to Silent Hill was an utter disappointment.
Released in January, Return to Silent Hill reboots the film franchise and loosely adapts the events of Silent Hill 2. However, the film was anything but the fresh start it wanted to be. It was utterly lambasted by critics, earning an abysmal Rotten Tomatoes score of 18%. Audiences weren’t so thrilled with the adaptation either, awarding it a 28% Popcornmeter and 4/10 stars on IMDb.
Will There Be Any More Silent Hill Movies?
While video game adaptations seem to be the new trend in Hollywood, things aren’t looking good for Silent Hill‘s cinematic future. Return to Silent Hill grossed a measly $48 million against a budget of $23 million, enough to be considered a massive flop. Even its newfound streaming success won’t be enough to save the franchise from inevitable doom.
Nevertheless, Silent Hill‘s last hope is its built-in fanbase. Many other video game adaptation franchises, including Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil, have managed to survive multiple flops thanks to their rabid fandoms. With this in mind, Silent Hill could return to the big screen at some point, though likely with a reboot and almost certainly not for several more years.
Return to Silent Hill may be dominating the streaming charts, but it won’t be enough to save the doomed reboot. There won’t be any direct sequels to one of 2026’s first box office bombs. But, given its reception, that’s probably a good thing.
Return to Silent Hill is available to stream on Hulu.
