The sci-fi hit Project Hail Mary finally arrives on streaming this month. Releasing in mid-March, the Amazon MGM Studios blockbuster has experienced a lengthy, circuitous path to streaming. MGM’s He-Man feature, currently in theaters, may follow a similar distribution path, though with a different motivation.
Project Hail Mary is a cinematic adaptation of Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name. Drew Goddard wrote the film’s script, having previously adapted Weir’s The Martian. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary follows a science teacher (Ryan Gosling) who awakes alone in space and slowly recalls his mission to save Earth’s sun from pending destruction.
The sci-fi comedy received swift critical praise, earning a near-perfect 9/10 from Screen Rant and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also became a popular sensation, with a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a record-breaking box office performance. Amazon Studios capitalized on the unprecedented box office success, significantly delaying its streaming debut to collect additional revenue via theater tickets and digital rentals.
Project Hail Mary enters an unexpected streaming service this June, three months after its theatrical release. While the film’s path to streaming seems unusual for an Amazon feature, the company has clarified that this is one of several standard release models. A look into Project Hail Mary’s journey to streaming may provide insight into Amazon’s potential VOD strategy for Masters of the Universe, which has struggled at the box office.
Amazon MGM Extended Project Hail Mary’s Initial Theatrical Window
Project Hail Mary became a surprise box office sensation following its March 2026 wide release. The Gosling-led sci-fi grossed $80.5 million during its domestic opening and went on to make over $680 million worldwide throughout its release. This impressive performance made Project Hail Mary Amazon MGM Studios’ highest-grossing film debut of all time, and secured it a lengthy theatrical stay.
About a month after Project Hail Mary‘s wide release, MGM agreed to extend its theatrical window amid continued box office success. Co-director Miller clarified what this extension meant for the film’s SVOD release in a social media post, saying Project Hail Mary would not be streaming anytime soon. “This is a movie that needs to be seen on a big screen,” Miller continued in his April 16 X post.
Project Hail Mary ultimately enjoyed a whopping 90-day exclusive theatrical window (via Variety). While 90-day windows were standard pre-2020, a 45-day window has become the new norm. Amazon MGM has faced past criticism for its particularly narrow exclusive theatrical window, regularly ushering its films to Prime Video under a month after their release. The studio’s 2024 Christmas action, Red One (2024), had a mere 26-day theatrical window. Project Hail Mary is the studio’s lengthiest theatrical release yet— forging a potential new trend for MGM’s top-performing films.
Instead of ushering the film straight to Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios further capitalized on the blockbuster’s popularity with an initial Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) release. This PVOD approach—in which at-home viewers can pay for early access to a new film—was intended to capitalize on the blockbuster’s popularity. Project Hail Mary became available to rent and purchase on May 12, 2026, nearly eight weeks after its theatrical debut. The sci-fi comedy was made available on all major digital retailers, costing $19.99 to rent and $24.99 to purchase on Amazon Prime.
Project Hail Mary premieres on MGM+ June 18, 2026
Project Hail Mary arrives on streaming June 18, though not on the expected streaming service. The Amazon MGM Studios blockbuster is being routed to MGM+, an Amazon Prime add-on. The MGM+ streaming service is available for $7.99 a month through a Prime Video subscription. For patient viewers who do not have an MGM+ account, Project Hail Mary is expected to eventually enter Amazon Prime.
A Deadline report clarified the film’s unexpected debut on MGM+ as opposed to Prime Video. Per the report, Amazon-produced films go through different green light models. The commonly known model sees movies ushered from theaters to Prime Video, as was the case with Red One. These flicks are generally bankrolled by Prime and are monetized under a different model.
The green light model for Project Hail Mary always had MGM+ as the Pay-one streaming home. This means that Hail Mary was always contracted to exclusively debut on MGM+ following its theatrical and PVOD release. Once the Pay-1 window expires, the sci-fi comedy is expected to land on Prime Video, though the timeline for this is unclear. The MGM dramedy American Fiction followed the same green light model, with MGM+ as the Pay-one.
Masters of The Universe Could Follow Project Hail Mary’s PVOD Release Strategy
Amazon MGM Studios gave Project Hail Mary a lengthy PVOD release before its streaming debut to further capitalize on the film’s box office success. However, the studio is reportedly considering a similar release model for Masters of the Universe to recoup losses following a lackluster box office performance.
MGM Studios released the He-Man flick on June 3rd, with a disappointing $29 million domestic opening against a $170 to $200 million budget—despite critical and popular praise. This slow start is unlikely to pick up, as the film has grossed just $40 million at the U.S. box office in the first ten days of its release. As of writing, Master of the Universe is number nine at the summer box office, after The Sheep Detectives. The release of Spielberg’s Disclosure Day on June 12 will further saturate the box office.
Per a Forbes report, MGM is considering a PVOD release for the box office dud to pick up some additional revenue. Following the path of Project Hail Mary, the He-Man film may be available to rent or purchase exclusively for higher fees before eventually entering streaming. However, it will likely receive closer to the traditional 45-day theatrical window than Hail Mary‘s impressive 90-day stay. This would translate to a streaming release in late July or early August, with the latest possible estimates citing an October release.
Masters of the Universe is expected to land on Amazon Prime Video, though it could continue to follow Project Hail Mary and start on the MGM+ add-on service.
