Miles Morales is easily one of Marvel’s most popular renditions of Spider-Man, his popularity skyrocketing with the release of the award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film in 2018. Now he’s returning for the 25th anniversary of Marvel Mangaverse, which is getting an official revival series to celebrate the event.
The Mangaverse itself was a Japanese celebration of beloved Western comic book superheroes in 2000, reimagining their iconic looks with an art style inspired by classic manga. Miles is getting that same treatment in the issues of that start and finish the upcoming Mangaverese series, Web of Blood and Web of Destiny.
Miles Morales Gets an Official Manga Redesign in the Marvel Mangaverse Revival
Miles Morales first debuted in Ultimate Fallout #4 in 2011, trying to emulate the original Spider-Man with an ill-fitting Halloween costume. The upgraded suit he eventually received was much closer in spirit, albeit modified with a different color scheme and pattern to distinguish his identity from that of the recently departed Peter Parker.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gave Miles a more comfortable-looking redesign by having him wear a hoodie and baggy shorts over his store-bought costume, completely going against the slim, aerodynamic look the original Spider-Man is known for. This silhouette became the best among Miles’ designs, and it’s what mangaka Yuji Kaku replicates for the cover of Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Blood #1.
With his characteristic black-and-red scheme, Miles wears a loose-fitting hoodie and baggy pants that are slimmed down at the calves and ankles by bandage wraps. The look is finished off with chunky sneakers and bracer-like gloves.
Miles’ Web of Blood design is reminiscent of common streetwear, capturing the core essence of Spider-Man: anyone can be the hero. It’s simple and highlights Miles’ down-to-earth personality, giving it a homemade feel (with some flair, of course).
Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Destiny, however, is a different story. Countless anime and manga designs tend to carry an ethereal edge, and Miles’ appearance on the issue cover follows suit. He’s depicted with a ragged dark cloak and a hand covered in tattered bandage wraps, but the most notable aspect of the illustration is the glowing pink energy that functions as his webbing, as well as the detailing of his mask.
Being more of a close-up portrait than a full-body shot, Web of Destiny’s cover art doesn’t show off the full design, but the small details alone are big hints towards what fans should be expecting from Joe and Jack Kelly’s rendition of his story.
The Marvel Mangaverse revival event begins on Sept. 20 of this year with the release of Web of Blood #1. It will end on Sept. 30 with Web of Destiny #1.
