Power Rangers Unveils New Green Ranger Tribute to Original Tommy Oliver Actor (Exclusive)

Power Rangers has officially shared with Screen Rant a new and extraordinary art tribute to Jason David Frank, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers actor who first brought the Green Ranger, Tommy Oliver, to life for Western audiences. His iconic portrayal helped establish the character’s legendary status among fans, while his contributions to the franchise as a whole continued for decades.

BOOM! Studios has recently announced an upcoming Power Rangers series dedicated to Tommy Oliver himself: Power Rangers: Green #1. Brought to life by the creative talents of BOOM! Studios veteran writer Paul Allor (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe) and up-and-coming artist Gustaffo Vargas (ALTIPLANO, Olympos: Nullhunter), the new series is set to kick off with its first 32-page issue on August 5, 2026, and will be available at local comic shops for $4.99.

Power Rangers: Green is set to explore a re-envisioned future for Tommy Oliver, where the fate of the world is once again at stake. Set in a dystopian future, the story follows Tommy, the last Power Ranger on Earth, as he lives a quiet life alongside his found family of misfits. However, the series will pull Tommy out of retirement and thrust him back into action as the Green Ranger.

With this new era for Tommy Oliver on the horizon, BOOM! Studios, in collaboration with fan-favorite artist Juni Ba (Batman: The Boy Wonder), have paid tribute to actor Jason David Frank with a stunning new variant cover for the debut issue of Power Rangers: Green.

Power Rangers Green #1 Juni Ba cover Jason David Frank Tribute

Juni Ba is one of the most distinctive and recognizable artistic voices in comics today, known for both his writing and his instantly identifiable style. His work includes Batman: The Boy Wonder for DC Comics, a fairy-tale-inspired retelling of Damian Wayne’s introduction into the Bat-Family, as well as Djeliya, his gorgeously illustrated reimagining of the West African Sundiata epic of Mandé origin.

Now, Juni Ba is bringing his signature style to the Power Rangers fandom with an emotionally resonant tribute to the late Jason David Frank, who passed away in 2022. In his characteristically soft color palette and expressive linework, Ba captures a peaceful, reflective scene set within the world of Power Rangers: Green, showing an older, retired Tommy Oliver walking through an open field alongside a member of his newfound family.

No characters have left their mark on Power Rangers quite like Tommy Oliver, and nowhere is this celebrated more than in an essential franchise tie-in

In the foreground, Tommy’s Green Ranger suit hangs on a clothesline, swaying gently in the wind, adding a surprisingly domestic and grounded twist to the Power Rangers legacy. It’s a rare depiction of the quieter side of being a Ranger, evoking everyday simplicity rather than battle, as the suit becomes almost symbolic of a life once lived in constant heroism. In the corner of the cover, Ba includes a simple dedication: “In memory of Jason David Frank.”

This tribute, combined with the emotional softness of Ba’s art style and its sense of calm reflection, makes for a fitting homage to the actor who helped define the Green Ranger’s lasting legacy. Debuting in 1993’s “Green with Evil” storyline, Frank’s Tommy Oliver quickly became the definitive Green Ranger for Western audiences, a status that endures decades later. Now, even after Frank’s passing, his influence continues to echo through the Power Ranger franchise, with this latest Juni Ba illustration serving as a poignant and beautiful addition to that enduring legacy.
