Paramount Officially Shuts Down New Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG After 2 Years

Avatar: The Last Airbender fans can’t seem to catch a break this year. Per IGN,the development of the highly anticipated Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG, first revealed in 2024, is suspended indefinitely, according to Shawn Kittelsen, SVP, Head of Creative and Production at Paramount Games Studio.

The announcement arrives following the delay of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, Paramount Skydance’s other new game based on the beloved Nickelodeon franchise, and the controversial decision to cancel the theatrical release of the new Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie in favor of a streaming release on Paramount+on October 9.

Paramount Officially Seals the Fate of The New Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG

Kittelsen’s statements to IGN highlight the influence of Paramount’s merger with Skydance Media, which became official almost one year ago in August 2025, on the decision to halt the development of the Avatar: The Last Airbender AAA RPG. “There were a lot of aspirations previously at Paramount, but there wasn’t necessarily the conviction or the support, and it wasn’t a separate division.”

The recent establishment of Paramount Games Studio restructured the company’s game development strategy from the ground up. Kittelsen explains, “Games was a sub-department within consumer products. Now we are a business unit, and we’re accountable for driving revenue and building games, and we have a larger team and more support behind us, including the fact that Skydance came with two game studios ready to play.” Game studios Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media now fall under the unified Paramount Skydance umbrella.

Kittelsen reveals that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, a different AAA action-RPG title, is getting a fully backed release instead of the Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG. “So we’re taking a different approach to games and wanting to see things through and make sure that anything that we announce, we’re prepared to launch. Even with something like [Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin] that’s earlier on, there is a deeper conviction and a larger investment being made in that title that we are going to ensure that we drive to launch.”

The update hits like a slap in the face to loyal fans of the long-running Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise, which began with the debut of Nickelodeon’s hit 61-episode fantasy series in 2005. Kettelsen’s assurances that halting the Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG’s development “doesn’t mean you won’t get a AAA Avatar game at some point, but it might come in a different iteration” are far from the original presentation of the game’s concept.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender AAA RPG was originally described as “the biggest video game in franchise history,” featuring an “all-new, never-before-seen Avatar,” before its development was shut down. After fans were told to expect “to be immersed in a vibrant world, master all four elements, engage in dynamic combat alongside companions, and experience the challenges and decisions that come with being the keeper of balance in the world,” the bar is high for any potential future release of the sidelined Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG.

Avatar: The Last Airbender New Fighting Game & Adult Aang Film Coming Soon

Despite no longer having a new RPG release on the calendar for 2026, Avatar: The Last Airbender fans still have two other major releases to look forward to this year.

After enduring one of the worst digital leaks in recent history, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, the upcoming film starring the main cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender as adults, is finally scheduled to make its streaming debut on Paramount+ on October 9, 2026. Fighting game enthusiasts and Avatar: The Last Airbender fans will also get to enjoy the highly anticipated release of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game this summer on July 23.

The upcoming Avatar Legends fighting game already offers plenty of iconic characters and spectacular move sets to play with, and now the game’s release is even bigger without the other RPG to look forward to. The game will be available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series XS with releases for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 reportedly coming soon.
