10 Must-Watch Fantasy Anime With Zero Bad Seasons

Fantasy anime lends itself perfectly to long-lasting epics that take fans’ breath away with their awe-inspiring scope and ambition. As such, while one-season wonders and long-running shows that release episodes continuously are common in fantasy anime, multi-season adventures are a staple of the genre.

Even in a genre so suited for long-term storytelling, sustaining top-grade execution over the course of multiple seasons can be a challenge. Many fantasy series have a promising start only to falter in later seasons or, in contrast, take too long to get into the groove of things. Thankfully, these fantastic fantasy anime series remain exceptional throughout their entire run, starting off strong and only getting better with each season.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Returned This Year With an Excellent Second Season

Arguably the biggest fantasy sensation of the 2020s, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End begins where most fantasy adventures draw their curtains. The story opens with the aftermath of the hero’s party slaying the Demon King, a quest of a lifetime that, nonetheless, was just a drop in the bottomless bucket of time for Frieren, an ancient elf who spends the series learning to understand what fleeting connections with people mean to her.

The first season of Frieren hooked fans with its unique premise, introspective depth, and excellent narrative balance of lighthearted slice-of-life, thrilling action, and profound character-driven drama. And Frieren’s 2026 comeback, despite giving viewers just 10 new episodes, is an exceptional continuation that continues reinforcing the series’ strengths while building towards even more exhilarating future developments.

Jujutsu Kaisen Has Been Upping the Stakes With Every Entry

Modern battle shonen has been favoring considerably darker stories than its predecessors, and leading this trend, among other excellent series, is Jujutsu Kaisen. Filled to the brim with high-octane sorcery battles, each of which can become the last for its characters, Jujutsu Kaisen is an unpredictable and fascinating spectacle that seems to be getting only more exhilarating, both in terms of narrative and visuals, with every season.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 already set the bar high with an intriguing premise and beautifully choreographed, explosive action, and Season 2 only upped the stakes with the shocking Shibuya Incident arc. However, JJK has arguably reached its peak with this year’s Season 3 – a masterwork of cinematic direction and experimental animation that consistently looks movie-quality.

Fate/Zero Is the Perfect Entry Point Into the Massive Franchise

The multi-media Fate franchise is famously massive and labyrinthine, with numerous anime entries that, nonetheless, are not created equal. Among them, Fate/Zero is regarded as one of the most popular and beginner-friendly series, serving as both a stellar standalone two-season dark fantasy narrative and a comprehensive introduction to the fascinating world of Fate.

Like most Fate series, Fate/Zero chronicles the chaotic developments of a Holy Grail War – a ruthless battle royal where mages clash using summoned spirits of historical heroes. Visual splendor and rich fantasy storytelling blend in Fate/Zero with thought-provoking depth one rarely expects from a flashy action flick, yet the complexity and moral ambiguity of the show’s characters is what makes it a classic.

The Cutesy Look of Made in Abyss Is Deceptive

At the heart of Made in Abyss’s science fantasy world lies the titular Abyss – a giant pit that goes down seemingly to the center of the Earth and holds within itself countless alluring mysteries. At first, Riko and Reg’s adventure into the Abyss’s depths seems like a wondrous venture, yet it swiftly proves to be a horrifying, traumatic endeavor.

Made in Abyss is not a series for the faint of heart, no matter how cutesy it looks. It strips away the innocence of its characters through many horrifying encounters with both the unimaginable fantastical terrors and the very grounded cruelty of humankind. However, the evocative mysteries of the Abyss keep viewers engrossed and watching season after season.

Bungo Stray Dogs Excels at Gradual Narrative Escalation

Bungo Stray Dogs executes an unorthodox premise of reimagining various famous figures from literary history as superpowered individuals, with their abilities based on the authors’ most famous works. The series itself begins as a rather localized action-mystery narrative that depicts various factions of Ability users battling for their own interests.

Yet, over the course of multiple seasons, Bungo Stray Dogs expands in scope tremendously, introducing new antagonists from around the world and upping the complexity of its worldbuilding and power system considerably. And, while the first part of the Bungo Stray Dogs manga has concluded, the series is likely to continue with even more mind-boggling developments.

Isekai anime is often criticized for its lack of originality and overreliance on generic fantasy tropes. Thankfully, as one of the genre’s best exemplars, Re:Zero doesn’t suffer from any of its common faults, telling an excellent story of an unlikely hero burdened by the power of resurrection in a ruthless, unforgiving fantasy world.

Unlike many of its peers, Re:Zero isn’t a one-season wonder. Its long-anticipated fourth season is currently airing, and the show is set to return as soon as later this Summer with a continuation of its ongoing arc. Thankfully, the series’ plot has been getting only more intriguing and ambitious over time, and the original novel series is nowhere close to concluding, which promises fans more top-notch seasons in the future.

Xianxia is an incredibly popular genre of Chinese fantasy that, until recently, hasn’t been particularly widespread in other parts of the globe. Thankfully, it has been introduced to more fantasy fans through fantastic donghua like Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, an adaptation of a world-famous danmei novel that combines high-stakes fantasy storytelling with evocative romance.

Years ago, Wei Wuxian was condemned as the founder of the Demonic Path of cultivation and subsequently killed in a brutal yet seemingly righteous attack. However, when he reincarnates in a new body and joins forces with his former peer, Lan Wangji, to investigate both new supernatural cases and long-lasting conspiracies, new details about his life and death come to light over the course of multiple seasons, bringing into question his standing as a villain.

Not all fantasy anime has to be action-oriented and high-octane, and Mushishi combines the mysterious allure of the supernatural with the unusually relaxing, “healing” atmosphere of iyashikei anime. Mushishi’s plot is mostly episodic, showing viewers travel snippets of a Mushi Master, Ginko, who aids those affected by primordial supernatural lifeforms called mushi.

A gorgeous, tranquil, yet surprisingly thought-provoking series, Mushishi – despite not having an overarching plot – remains immersive for its entire run of two seasons and numerous special episodes. Every step of Ginko’s travels has something to tell the audience about appreciating life’s simplest treasures, preserving the bond between humanity and nature, and facing mundane existence with reverence, all while giving viewers a chance to lose themselves in the show’s calming, reflective atmosphere.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has been a classic of shonen fantasy ever since the manga began serializing way back in 1987. However, the series found success with modern viewers with the release of a brand-new adaptation by David Production, which has recently reached the story’s most anticipated story arc, Steel Ball Run.

Despite counting nearly 200 episodes, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure avoided its plot getting stale by implementing a unique structure. Each JoJo Part almost functions like its own series – it still follows the same rules and stars a protagonist from the Joestar bloodline, yet features a completely new cast of characters and takes place in a different time period, allowing the narrative to experiment and transform endlessly.

Attack on Titan Has One of the Most Unpredictable & Compelling Storylines in Dark Fantasy

As one of the goliaths of modern dark fantasy, Attack on Titan weaves a story that baffles fans with its unpredictability and levels of meticulous foreshadowing. The first few seasons of Attack on Titan unfold as a grim and riveting survival thriller, with humanity fighting tooth and nail to simply understand and contain the threat posed by the bloodthirsty Titans beyond the Walls.

Season 4, however, turns the entire story on its head, finally unveiling the mystery of the Titans and making the protagonists fight fellow humans instead of senseless monsters. Attack on Titan’s narrative remains unpredictable throughout, yet retrospectively, progresses into an excellently executed, cohesive dark fantasy story that fully deserves to be called a modern masterpiece.
