One of the year’s most unexpectedly divisive period dramas is officially a streaming hit. It might even be enough to make up for The Bride!‘s lack-luster run at the box office.
Per FlixPatrol, The Bride! starring Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, and Jake Gyllenhaal has officially made its way onto the list of the top ten films currently streaming on HBO Max in 19 separate countries, including the United States, Australia, and Mexico. In the U.S., it’s in fourth place, and in eighth place on the global charts on June 14.
The Bride! has also claimed a place for itself on the list of the top streaming programs overall on the platform for nine different countries, further cementing its success in the realm of digital media after a decidedly devastating box office performance.
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! — Explained
Written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Bride! arrived in theaters in March and introduced audiences to a decidedly meta take on the classic Frankenstein formula. The film stars Jessie Buckley as Ida, a woman living in Chicago in the 1930s who suffers a sudden and tragic death after being possessed by the spirit of Mary Shelley at a dinner party. This eventually leads Ida to being reanimated at the behest of the actual Frankenstein’s monster, simply known as Frank (portrayed by Christian Bale), setting up a dark and fantastical romantic drama.
The core cast of The Bride! is rounded out by Peter Sarsgaard as Detective Jake Wiles, who is on the hunt for Frank and the Bride, Annette Bening as Doctor Cornelia Euphronious, who assists Frank in reanimating the titular Bride, and Jake Gyllenhaal as Frank’s personal Hollywood idol, Ronnie Reed. The Bride! also features appearances by John Magaro, Penélope Cruz, Matthew Maher, Jeannie Berlin, Louis Cancelmi, Julianne Hough, and Zlatko Burić.
Despite the film’s overwhelming star power, The Bride! failed to leave much of an impact on the box office during its theatrical run. During its time in theaters, The Bride! grossed just $24 million against a budget of close to $90 million. The Bride! was also met with particularly divisive reviews all around, leaving it a 57% critical “Fresh” rating and a 69% audience-generated “Popcornmeter” score via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
What’s Next for the Stars of The Bride!?
Fortunately for fans of Christian Bale, The Bride! won’t be the star’s only turn at the silver screen this year. Currently, fans are eagerly awaiting his appearance as legendary football coach and executive Al Davis in the upcoming Madden biopic from director David O. Russell, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Cambron Clark.
Madden is set to star Nicolas Cage as John Madden, and will chart his journey from football legend to video game icon. Apart from Cage and Bale, Madden stars Kathryn Hahn as Virginia Madden, John Mulaney as Trip Hawkins, Joel Murray as Pat Summerall, Siena Miller as Carol Davis, and Shane Gillis in a still undisclosed role.
Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal recently starred in Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey, and is expected to premiere Road House 2 on Prime Video later this year.
The Bride! is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
