Netflix’s Hit Dystopian Thriller That Set A Record 7 Years Ago Is Planning A Remake

The Platform is close to getting a remake.

Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, the dystopian thriller was released in 2020, with Netflix nabbing worldwide rights after the film’s strong premiere at TIFF in 2019. With its story about inmates in a vertical prison forced to fight over a descending platform of food, The Platform was a major success for Netflix and currently stands as the streamer’s seventh most popular non-English movie of all time.

Now, per Variety, The Platform is one of several titles being pitched at a remake rights event during the Shanghai Film & TV Market on June 21. Latido Films will bring the movie to the event, which features various companies attempting to convince buyers of the Asian market remake potential of their titles.

Among the other films being pitched at the event include Rosa’s Wedding, Two Many Chefs, and When You No Longer Love Me. Antonio Saura, the managing director of Latido Films, revealed that remake rights are already close to being sold on The Platform. He shared the following statement about the decision to sell the remake rights:

“Platform represents a unique opportunity to make remakes since you can incorporate local actors into a proven high concept film. On top of that, it can have huge production value with a relative low cost. As far as the storytelling, stories of resistance, self-growth and struggle are always welcome. The film falls in the category of genres that are appreciated.”

The Platform is in Spanish, and the focus of the Shanghai Remakes event on the Asian market suggests those hoping for an English-language version of the movie will be out of luck, at least for now. As Saura explains, the film has a high-concept story that translates easily into different languages and cultures, suggesting an American take could eventually happen.

After launching on Netflix in March 2020, The Platform went on to accumulate 82.8 million views, with 129.7 million hours viewed. This puts it ahead of other all-time non-English Netflix hits like Counterattack (2021), Ad Vitam (2025), and Brick (2025). Troll (2022) remains the most popular non-English movie of all time on the streamer, with a staggering 103 million views and 178.6 million hours viewed.

The film was such a hit that a sequel was given the green light not long after. The Platform 2 hit the streamer in 2024 but didn’t achieve the same level of success critically or in terms of viewership. On Rotten Tomatoes, the original has an 81% critics’ score, while the sequel only has a 36%.

The Platform stars Ivan Massagué, Antonia San Juan, Emilio Buale, Alexandra Masangkay, Mario Pardo, and Algis Arlauskas, among others. The remake would seemingly feature an all-new cast, with Asian actors brought in to play the characters, as Saura suggests.

Remakes, reboots, and sequels are all the rage in Hollywood, and have been for some time. The Platform remake fits into this growing trend, and it could be a sign that more Netflix films may get remade moving forward. If something is already a proven hit, after all, that takes a lot of risk out of the equation for investors.

Nothing is finalized just yet regarding The Platform remake, but it certainly sounds like audiences can expect a new take on the film in the coming years. Whether it becomes the smash hit that the original was, however, remains to be seen.
