Warner Bros. has had more success with original movies in the last year or so than with IP-driven fare. Sure, movies such as Final Destination Bloodlines and The Conjuring: Last Rites have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars at the box-office, but they were always expected to. The more impressive feat was getting films such as Sinners, Weapons, and One Battle After Another to become mainstream hits. The studio has another major original movie on its slate this year: Alejando G. Iñárritu‘s Digger, starring Tom Cruise. It’s a huge, very expensive risk that needs to do The Revenant-level business to succeed. The studio began 2026 with yet another filmmaker-driven hit: Wuthering Heights, which grossed $242 million worldwide against a reported budget of $80 million. However, two subsequent franchise films have significantly underperformed.
The first of these two was Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which opened to mediocre reviews and grossed $90 million against a reported budget of $22 million. For an IP-driven title, this isn’t nearly good enough. The Mummy was followed by Mortal Kombat II, which ended its run with around $130 million worldwide against a reported budget of $80 million. This is around half of what Wuthering Heights made at a similar cost. Mortal Kombat II serves as a sequel to Mortal Kombat, which was released day-and-date on HBO Max and in theaters in 2021. Despite the controversial release, it grossed more than $80 million worldwide against a reported budget of $55 million. W.B. hoped for the sequel to deliver the sort of bump seen by Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Dune: Part Two, both of whose predecessors received similar self-defeating releases.

‘Mortal Kombat II’ Is Now Available to Rent and Purchase at Home
Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat II features Karl Urban as the fan-favorite character Johnny Cage and received more favorable reviews than the first film. It now holds a 64% critics’ score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “A self-aware slugfest that plays directly to those who know the difference between Fatalities and Babalities, Mortal Kombat II may not be a flawless victory, but it’s likely the most roundly enjoyable entry in the franchise yet.” However, it’s the movie’s “Verified Hot” 87% audience score that seems to be powering it to success following its digital debut a few days ago. According to FlixPatrol, Mortal Kombat II has already begun a redemption arc by finding prime spots on the domestic Amazon, iTunes, and Vudu charts. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
