Stranger Things may have finally come to an end back in December, but with this year celebrating the show’s 10-year anniversary, the hype for one of Netflix’s most successful shows is far from over. Since the finale aired to mixed reviews, Netflix has been no stranger to collaborating with other companies in order to keep the magic of Hawkins alive, whether that is the arrival of arcade games or TTRPG experiences.
Now another exciting free download is up for grabs, turning Stranger Things into the RPG we have always dreamed of as well as offering fans the chance to explore an alternate timeline. Created by ianthedad on itchi.o, Stranger Things RPG is a GM-led narrative tabletop adventure game set in an alternate version of Hawkins, one where Eleven was not saved and the Upside Down was free to spread.
You and friends will take on the role of some ordinary members of Hawkins who must team up to face some extraordinary events. Just remember, you are not heroes… yet.
The free download includes a map of Hawkins to help you picture the scene, alongside a Rulebook, Time Tracker, Character Sheet, Objective Cards, NPC Cards, Enemy Cards, Item Cards, and Tarot Cards. With the game itself allowing the GM to have free rein when it comes to the face of Hawkins, its residents, and the heroic team, replayability is off the charts.
With the Stranger Things finale leaving a lot to be desired, it is interactive stories such as this that allow fans to see the story play out how they want to. After all, with our very own Kara Hedash claiming that “the Duffer Brothers missed the mark by playing it too safe” in their review of the series finale, any help adapting the story would be much appreciated.
“We might continue to dissect the Stranger Things series finale well after its release, for the good and the bad. Still, the overall success of the series can’t be denied, no matter the reception of the show’s final season. The Duffer Brothers’ Netflix series was something special, even if the story didn’t always go the way we had hoped.”
Luckily, the Stranger Things fanbase is still alive and well, and as evident by this Stranger Things RPG, they are still coming up with unique ways to experience the beloved story, and most importantly, fix what they didn’t like about the grand finale. That truly is the magic of storytelling, and after all, it is not the first nor will it be the last time we pretend a show finale never happened.
