Keanu Reeves may not have any Oscars or Emmys on his trophy shelf, but what he lacks in awards he makes up for in recognition and audience draw. Even before his role as John Wick in five different action movies, Reeves was one of the biggest movie stars in the world thanks to his role as Neo in The Matrix. His career appeared to be heading in a different direction in the early 2010s, but John Wick turned things around on its way to becoming one of the most successful action franchises of all time. Reeves has now expanded his repertoire and picked up other roles in major franchises, bringing a level of humanity that only he can. Back at the end of 2024, he lent his voice to the role of Shadow the Hedgehog in the massively successful blockbuster, Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Shadow the Hedgehog had no role to play in the first two Sonic movies, but this was by design. The first film introduced Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, while the first sequel set the stage for the arrival of Idris Elba as Knuckles. After Reeves debut in Sonic 3, it’s Amy Rose who is coming next in Sonic 4, which is coming to theaters on March 19, 2027. Paramount has even recruited Kristen Bell to star in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, along with Nick Offerman and Ben Kingsley and the other returning stars. More than a year and a half removed from the worldwide premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the film recently arrived on Netflix globally, where it has surged into the top 10 most-watched titles in the world. What Is ‘Sonic 3’ About?
An official synopsis of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reads as follows:
“When a mysterious and vengeful hedgehog named Shadow escapes 50 years of captivity, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles face their greatest threat yet. Outmatched and desperate, the trio must forge an unlikely alliance with their arch-nemesis Dr. Robotnik to stop Shadow before he unleashes a catastrophic weapon and destroys everything they’ve sworn to protect.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was the most successful film in the franchise by every metric. It was the first installment to win over critics, earning scores of 85% from reviewers and 95% from fans on Rotten Tomatoes. It also grossed $492 million at the box office against a $122 million budget, positioning the fourth installment to be the first film in the franchise to cross $500 million.
