5 Years Later, The Rock’s High-Octane Action Thriller Gets Disappointing Update From MCU Star

Dwayne Johnson’s action/thriller movie Emergency Contact has received an unfortunate update from one of its reported stars. Yahya Abdul-Matteen II, who portrays Wonder Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently revealed the film’s status.

Abdul-Matteen II spoke with Deadline about his role in Wonder Man, and the conversation eventually turned to some of his upcoming projects, including Emergency Contact and a limited series titled The Scent of Burning Flowers. While Abudel-Mateen II’s star continues to rise, not all of his planned projects are able to keep up.

“I’m not quite sure,” he revealed when asked if Emergency Contact and The Scent of Burning Flowers were still moving forward. “I’ve got a lot of irons in the pot that are hot. Some of them are cooler than others right now and those two are probably some of the cooler irons in the pot right now.”

Dwayne Johnson Has Moana, Jumanji Sequels Releasing This Year

While Emergency Contact may no longer be pushing ahead with Warner Bros., both Abdul-Mateen II and Johnson still have plenty of projects lined up for the future. Next month, fans will be able to see Johnson reprise his role as Maui in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Moana, which hits theaters on July 10. A third Moana film is also in the works, with Johnson set to produce as well as star.

Later this year, a new Jumanji film titled Open World is set to be released on Christmas Day, with the studio dubbing it the fifth and ‘final’ installment in the film series. Johnson will be joined by Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas and many others reprising their roles from previous films.

As for Abdul-Mateen II, his lead role as Wonder Man, which aired in January, is just the beginning of an action-packed year for the actor. At the end of April, his latest TV series — Netflix’s Man on Fire — dropped to positive reviews. He also has two films lined up for the rest of the year: a historical crime film titled By Any Means and a period comedy-drama written by Quentin Tarantino called The Adventures of Cliff Booth.

Wonder Man Star Reveals Conditions For Taking the Marvel Role

Before taking the role as Simon Williams in Wonder Man, Abdul-Mateen II was no stranger to superhero movies, having previously starred as Black Manta in the DCEU’s Aquaman and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. In addition to giving an update on the state of Emergency Contact, he also opened up to Deadline about what it took to get him on board for Marvel’s latest hit series.

“We got Kevin [Feige] on the phone and I asked him — well, I let him know, ‘Hey, I really, really like what you guys are doing, and I want to come and play, but I know I only get one Marvel buck to spend. So, I want to spend it well,'” Abdul-Mateen II revealed.

“And he said two things: he said, ‘It’ll be a buck well spent,’ and, in that meeting,” I said, ‘I want to let people know that I’m funny,” Abdul-Mateen II added. “And he saw that I was saying, ‘No one knows that I have a funny bone,” and he was like, ‘Yes, that’s exactly what I see, and I want people to know that, too.’ It was cool that we were all thinking the same things.”
