Karl Urban’s Dark Fantasy Sequel Is Finally Heading to Digital After Flopping in Theaters

Mortal Kombat fans will soon be able to watch the new movie in the comfort of their own homes. The digital and Blu-ray release dates for Mortal Kombat II have just been shared.

Mortal Kombat II will arrive on digital platforms tomorrow, June 9. Audiences will be able to rent the fantasy sequel for $19.99 or purchase it outright for $24.99 on digital storefronts like Amazon Prime Video and Fandango at Home. Mortal Kombat fans also have the option to wait until July 28 for the sequel to be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD.

To promote Mortal Kombat II‘s imminent digital release, IGN released the “very red band” first 10 minutes of the movie online, which can be viewed below. The movie opens with a brief origin story for Kitana, showing her as a young child who watches in horror as the Emperor Shao Kahn faces off against her father, King Jerrod of Edenia.

Mortal Kombat II then jumps forward to the present day, with a now-adult Kitana training with Jade. Sophia Xu portrayed the young Kitana, with Adeline Rudolph playing her adult counterpart.

Mortal Kombat II‘s arrival on digital comes after an underwhelming run at the box office. Warner Bros. and New Line had high hopes for the fantasy sequel, choosing to open it during the summer box office season after the trailer reached 106.8M views worldwide within 24 hours of its launch.

Unfortunately, WB and New Line were reminded that strong online interest does not guarantee a lot of ticket sales. After a month in theaters, Mortal Kombat II has earned just $128 million worldwide against an $80 million production budget.

While an improvement over the box office of 2021’s Mortal Kombat, its predecessor was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, which impacted its box office potential. Mortal Kombat II did receive better reviews from critics though. It holds a 64% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the first film’s 55% score.

Simon McQuoid returned to direct Mortal Kombat II. The sequel finds Johnny Cage recruited to join his fellow Earthrealm fighters in an ultimate, no-holds barred, gory interdimensional tournament against the Outworld warriors and stop the tyrannical emperor Shao Kahn, with the help of Edenian princess Kitana.

Karl Urban makes his franchise debut as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II. The sequel also stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Josh Lawson as Kano, and Tati Gabrielle as Jade, among others.

Is Mortal Kombat III Still Happening?

Last year, WB and New Line were so confident that Mortal Kombat II would be a box office hit that they tapped Jeremy Slater to begin writing Mortal Kombat III. Following the poor box office performance of Mortal Kombat II, it’s unclear if the threequel will actually move forward. If it does, Slater already revealed that the next movie will explore what actually happened to Liu Kang, hinting that the fan-favorite character may not have died at the end of the 2026 sequel.

Mortal Kombat II arrives on digital on June 9, followed by a physical media release on July 28.
