10 Strongest Pokémon Cards in 2026

When it comes to collecting Pokémon cards, many collectors only care about the monetary value of the cards. Pokémon cards can get quite pricey, with some rare and highly sought-after cards reaching values of thousands of dollars. Many collectors, however, are more interested in the value of the cards in competitive play. Many cards might feature beautiful artwork, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re actually useful while playing the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

This list will take a look at 10 modern powerful cards that any player would want to add to their deck or even build their deck around. This list will include cards from the Mega Evolution era, which was first released in September 2025 with the Mega Evolution Base Set. Since then, Mega Evolution has received four expansions, starting with Phantasmal Flames (November 2025), Ascended Heroes (January 2026), Perfect Order (March 2026), and Chaos Rising (2026).

Meowth ex’s Last-Ditch Catch Ability Makes It a Powerful Support Card

[CCC] Tuck Tail (60)
Put this Pokémon and all attached cards into your hand.

Meowth ex is a Colorless Basic Pokémon card from Mega Evolution’s Perfect Order expansion, and at a glance, it doesn’t seem like much. It has a solid HP of 170 for a Basic Pokémon, and it can deal 60 damage with its Tuck Tail ability. Tuck Tail also allows the player to put Meowth ex and all the cards attached to it back into their hand, but the ability costs three Energy to use. Overall, a decent Basic Pokémon, but nothing to write home about.

It’s Meowth ex’s Last-Ditch Catch Ability that makes it worth including in any deck. The card description reads: “Once during your turn, when you play this Pokémon from your hand onto your Bench, you may use this Ability. Search your deck for a Supporter card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck. You can’t use more than 1 Ability that has “Last-Ditch” in its name each turn.” Being able to search and pull a Supporter card from your deck after playing Meowth ex can easily make or break your next play.

Forest of Vitality is a Necessary Stadium Card for Any Grass Deck

Image via The Pokémon Company

Forest of Vitality is a Trainer Stadium card from Perfect Order, and it is an absolute must for any player who wants to build a Grass-type deck. The card description reads, “Each player’s Grass Pokémon can evolve into Grass Pokémon during the turn they play those Pokémon, except during their first turn.”

Needless to say, being able to evolve a Grass Pokémon the moment they play said Pokémon can give a player a huge advantage. For players who want to build a deck around Mega Venusaur ex (which we will talk about later), Forest of Vitality is an important Trainer card. The faster players can get their heavy hitters onto the field, the better.

Core Memory is an Important Support Card for Mega Zygarde ex

Core Memory - ME03- Perfect Order Image via The Pokémon Company

Core Memory is a powerful Trainer card from Perfect Order and, admittedly, a bit of a niche one because it only works with Mega Zygarde ex. Mega Zygarde ex is currently one of the most powerful Mega Evolution cards on the market, though, so Core Memory needs to be part of a Mega Zygarde ex deck.

Core Memory’s description reads: “The Mega Zygarde ex this card is attached to can use the attack on this card. (You still need the necessary Energy to use this attack.)” Essentially, Core Memory replaces Mega Zygarde ex’s normal attack with the Geobuster attack on Core Memory. Geobuster deals a devastating 350 damage, which can easily KO most Pokémon in a single hit, even other Mega Evolutions.

Premium Power Pro is a Must for Any Good Fighting-Type Deck

Premium Power Pro - ME- Ascended Heroes Image via The Pokémon Company

Premium Power Pro is a Trainer card from Ascended Heroes, and it is a necessary addition to any good Fighting-type deck. Two of the most powerful Mega Evolutions on that market are Mega Zygarde ex and Mega Lucario ex, and Premium Power Pro makes both of those Pokémon even more deadly.

Premium Power Pro’s description reads: “During this turn, attacks used by your Fighting Pokémon do 30 more damage to your opponent’s Active Pokémon (before applying Weakness and Resistance).” Needless to say, buffing any powerful Fighting-type Pokémon’s attack by 30 is nothing to sneeze at. That could easily mean the difference between KO-ing a Pokémon and allowing them to survive another turn.

Dawn Can Put an Entire Evolution Line Into Your Hand In a Single Turn

Dawn - 129:094 - ME02- Phantasmal Flames Image via The Pokémon Company

Dawn is another Trainer Supporter card from Phantasmal Flames, and honestly, having Dawn in your deck sort of feels like the ultimate cheat code. Dawn’s card description reads: “Search your deck for a Basic Pokémon, a Stage 1 Pokémon, and a Stage 2 Pokémon, reveal them, and put them into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.”

This means that when a player uses Dawn, they are able to pull three Pokémon cards from their deck in a single turn, potentially giving them access to an entire evolutionary line in a single turn. The only real downside is that the player must then show their pulls to their opponent, giving them a little heads up about their next plays so they have time to prepare.

Mega Venusaur ex Has a Massive HP Pool & a Special Ability

Mega Venusaur ex - 177/132 - ME01: Mega Evolution (MEG) Image via The Pokémon Company

Mega Venusaur ex is one of the Mega Evolution Base Set’s most powerful Mega Evolutions. This card features an incredible Mega Evolution version of Venusaur, the beloved first generation Grass-type starter Pokémon, and it has a few key features that make it deadly. First and foremost, Mega Venusaur ex has a massive HP pool of 380, meaning it’s almost certain to survive any incoming attack, even from powerful Mega Evolution opponents.

Mega Venusaur ex’s Jungle Dump Attack deals 240 damage, which isn’t too shabby, but it also heals Mega Venusaur ex for 30 HP every time the attack is used. Being able to heal itself makes Mega Venusaur ex a strong contender, but it’s the Solar Transfer Ability that really makes this card shine. The Solar Transfer Ability description reads: “As often as you like during your turn, you may use this Ability. Move a Basic Grass Energy from 1 of your Pokémon to another of your Pokémon.” Being able to shuffle around as many Grass Energy cards as you want in a single turn offers a huge advantage.

Mega Gengar ex is Highly Sought-After By Collectors & Players

[DD] Void Gale (230)
Move an Energy from this Pokemon to 1 of your Benched Pokemon.

Mega Gengar ex is a Darkness-type Stage 2 Pokémon card from Ascended Heroes, and it is probably one of the most sought-after cards on this list. The Special Illustration Rare (SIR) version of this card is worth around $1,400, making it an extremely valuable chase card, but it’s also a strong card for competitive play. Mega Gengar ex has an HP pool of 350, and it’s Void Gale Attack deals 230 damage with just two Darkness Energy. Void Gale also allows the player to move one Darkness Energy from Mega Gengar ex to a Benched Pokémon.

In addition to all of these incredible stats, Mega Gengar ex also has the Shadowy Concealment Ability. The description reads: “If 1 of your Darkness Pokémon is Knocked Out by damage from an attack from your opponent’s Pokémon ex, that player takes 1 fewer Prize card. The effect of Shadowy Concealment doesn’t stack.” If your opponent manages to KO one of your Pokémon, you’ll be able to take a consolation prize by denying them a Prize card.

Mega Gardevoir ex is One of the Best Modern Psychic-Type Pokémon

Mega Gardevoir ex - Mega Evolution #168 Image via The Pokémon Company

Mega Gardevoir ex is a Stage 2 Psychic-type Pokémon from the Mega Evolution Base Set, and it is one of the best modern Psychic-type Pokémon available in the game. This Pokémon has 360 HP and has two different attacks, each costing only one Psychic Energy, making Mega Gardevoir ex a powerful heavy hitter with little investment requirements.

The first Attack, Overflowing Wishes, doesn’t deal any damage. Instead, it allows players to pull Energy Cards out of their deck. “For each of your Benched Pokémon, search your deck for a Basic Psychic Energy card and attach it to that Pokémon. Then, shuffle your deck.” The second Attack, Mega Symphonia, deals 50 base damage, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but it deals an additional 50 damage for every Psychic Energy attached to all of your Pokémon, not just Mega Gardevoir ex.

[FFF] Gaia Wave (200)
During your opponent’s next turn, this Pokémon takes 30 less damage from attacks (after applying Weakness and Resistance).

Attack 2

[FFFFF] Nullifying Zero
For each of your opponent’s Pokémon, flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 150 damage to that Pokémon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.)

Mega Zygarde ex has already been mentioned on this list, while talking about the Trainer cards Core Memory and Premium Power Pro. As promised, we are now discussing Mega Zygarde ex, a Basic Fighting-type Pokémon with 310 HP from Perfect Order. Mega Zygarde ex might be a bit squishier than other Mega Evolution Pokémon, but its Attacks more than make up for the little dip in health. When combined with the aforementioned Trainer cards, it becomes even more powerful.

Mega Zygarde ex’s first attack, Gaia Wave, deals 200 damage and costs three Fighting Energy. Once Gaia Wave hits an opponent’s Pokémon, the next time that Pokémon hits Mega Zygarde ex, it deals 30 less damage. The second attack, Nullifying Zero, allows Mega Zygarde ex to target the opponent’s benched Pokémon instead. The description reads: “For each of your opponent’s Pokémon, flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 150 damage to that Pokémon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.)” Nullifying Zero costs five Fighting Energy, but it has the potential to wipe out a player’s entire bench.

Most Players Consider Mega Lucario ex the Most Powerful Mega Evolution

Attach up to 3 Basic Fighting Energy cards from your discard pile to your Benched Pokemon in any way you like.

Attack 2

[FF] Mega Brave (270)
During your next turn, this Pokemon can’t use Mega Brave.

Mega Lucario ex is a Stage 1 Fighting-type Pokémon from the Mega Evolution Base Set and many players consider it to be the strongest Mega Evolution on the market. Mega Lucario ex has 340 HP and two low-cost attacks that make it extremely powerful. The first attack, Aura Jab, deals 130 damage with just one Fighting Energy, but it also allows the player to attach up to three Fighting Energy cards from the discard pile to any Benched Pokémon. This can give players a huge advantage and help set up other powerful Fighting-type Pokémon for battle.

Attack two, Mega Brave, deals 270 damage with just two Fighting Energy. Similar attacks usually cost three or four Energy cards or force players to discard Energy cards from the Pokémon, so dealing 270 for just two Energy is incredibly strong. The only downside is that Mega Lucario ex can’t use Mega Brave two times in a row, but Mega Brave and Aura Jab will KO basically any Pokémon in the game. Combined with Premium Power Pro, both attacks can deal 30 more damage.
