HBO Max is filled with all sorts of interesting projects that often do not get their due time in the spotlight. However, sometimes there will be movies that quietly drop that don’t make much of an impact immediately, but eventually end up making waves in the streamer’s algorithm. Miss You, Love You is one such project.
Released in May to limited fanfare despite an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, it has received an audience that maybe wasn’t there when it initially dropped. Weirdly and unexpectedly, this could mirror the movie itself.
Miss You, Love You Explores Grief in Unconventional Circumstances
Miss You, Love You follows Diane (Allison Janney), a mother who just lost her husband, Henry, to Parkinson’s, and Jamie (Andrew Rannells), the assistant of Diane’s son Tyler, who refuses to come to the funeral. Appalled by the circumstances, Diane is at first standoffish and hurtful to Jamie, especially since Tyler won’t even so much as call her. There are glimmers of Janney’s West Wing prowess in these scenes, despite the palpable hurt.
However, something interesting happens when she continues to lash out – Jamie doesn’t back down from wanting to help her plan Henry’s funeral. The more the two get to know each other, the more they realize they have a lot in common despite the generational differences. With their similarities becoming more open, what they’ve kept hidden inside threatens to come undone the closer the funeral approaches.
Miss You, Love You Is a Dramatic Turn From Those Best Known for Comedy
Miss You, Love You mostly stars Janney and Rannells, but there are minor players that those with a keen eye for comedies might recognize. Most prominent is Rannells himself, who famously originated the role of Elder Kevin Price in The Book of Mormon and starred in other Broadway comedies like Gutenberg! The Musical and Falsettos. Some might also recognize him from the Hulu show Deli Boys, which recently premiered and has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, among others.
There are others in this cast you might recognize, starting with the church minister portrayed by Oscar Nunez, who plays Oscar in both The Office and The Paper. Diane’s nosy next-door neighbor, Judith, is played by Bonnie Hunt, who has done voice work for Disney movies such as Cars and Zootopia.
However, the biggest standout in this regard is the director. Miss You, Love You was written and directed by Jim Rash, best known for portraying the neurotic and eclectic Dean Pelton on Community. Rash is no stranger to the director’s chair, having directed The Way, Way Back and Downhill as well as some episodes of Community, but Miss You, Love You marks his full shift into drama.
Where to Watch Miss You, Love You
Miss You, Love You initially premiered on HBO on May 29th. However, it has slowly received attention on HBO Max. Across the United States, it is coming up as one of the top movies on the platform, likely due to its relatively short runtime and evergreen themes of grief and forgiveness. While it might not be the most pleasant or easygoing watch, this drama is certainly one that will get people thinking about their marks on their families and the world.
