It’s no secret that the Halo franchise has been through a bit of a rough time overall since the halcyon days of the original trilogy, and Halo: Reach. The series has absolutely lost a ton of momentum with everyday players, and it needs to get it back quickly before they lose the really loyal fans who stand by the IP as one of the best in gaming.
That said, the green shoots of hope spring eternal, and there are some reasons to think that we could be headed in the right direction, despite so much of the detail being up in the air. Campaign Evolved could be a masterful way to get people back on board with something familiar, before revealing whatever the next main series game is going to be.
At the time of writing, we know very little about what that next step is going to look like, but there are some clues emerging in adjacent releases that could hint at potential futures.
Halo’s Future Has Finally Been Teased
If you follow along with the wider Halo lore, then you probably already know about the Waypoint Chronicles, a series of short stories that have been releasing since 2022. Those tales have just been released in a print compendium titled Halo: Waypoint Chronicles, that includes ten additional, exclusive tales that fans haven’t seen before.
They’re all pretty great, but the one that’s causing a bunch of hubbub right now is Ghosts of the Gyre, a complicated story that could have some wide-reaching implications for the overall story of the next game. Without wishing to spoil all of it, the Forerunners are at the center of it all once again, along with that pesky artificial intelligence that seems so prescient these days.
Over on Reddit, fans have been discussing what the story means for the game we may get in the future, and it’s sage to say they’re excited.
“Ghosts of the Gyre was pretty nutty, and I liked that one alot. Granted, my preferred corner of the Halo universe is the ancient/cosmic side, but it was still pretty nutty. Shalimanda is very… interesting to think about. There’s some shadowy connection between the Ancestors and the Endless, and I’m not sure what it is, but I do believe the answer is available to us in the lore we have already,” one comment read.
While another added, “Ghosts of the Gyre has me DYING for the next Halo game. ‘The metarch must be deployed.’ Stop teasing me and just give me the next game already LOL.”
Halo Fans Are Loving The Waypoint Chronicles
It’s not just Ghosts that is seemingly blowing everyone away right now, with huge revelations that have wide-reaching implications for the lore emerging in many of the new tales. If you are a Halo fan, this latest iteration of the Waypoint Chronicles is a bit of a must-read while we wait to hear more from those in charge of the franchise.
