Guy Ritchie’s Indiana Jones Meets National Treasure Adventure Keeps Climbing the Charts 1 Year Later

Guy Ritchie’s movies will never get old, and his divisive adventure film Fountain of Youth proves that. The movie premiered on Apple TV on May 23, and it’s still a hit over a year later.

On June 14, Fountain of Youth just had another climb on the charts in the U.S., hitting the fifth place. The movie also holds the same position internationally, where it has been a tremendous success for over 300 days.

What Happens in Fountain of Youth?

Perfect for fans of Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones franchise and Nicolas Cage’s National Treasure, Fountain of Youth follows estranged siblings Luke and Charlotte Purdue, who reunite to embark on a journey to find the famed Fountain of Youth. The adventure, however, involves hiccups from the Interpol and a secret society known as the “Protectors of the Path.”

The adventure film had Ritchie at the helm, with critically acclaimed screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Ready or Not, Scream, Zodiac) penning the script. It had a star-studded ensemble cast, featuring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman as Luke and Charlotte, alongside Eiza González, and Domhnall Gleeson, with Arian Moayed, Laz Alonso, Carmen Ejogo, and Stanley Tucci in supporting roles.

Fountain of Youth didn’t have a theatrical release despite its $180 million budget, and premiered straight on Apple TV. Even so, it was a tremendous streaming success, holding onto the Top 10 charts in the U.S. for 338 days since its premiere.

That is, despite the poor reception. Fountain of Youth received negative reviews, holding a disappointing 35% “rotten” score from critics out of 116 reviews and 38% from the audience.

The reviews admit the film is entertaining, and that it checks all the boxes of a treasure hunt adventure film, but the lack of chemistry between Portman and Krasinski, as well as the execution ruined its potential.

Guy Ritchie’s New Film In the Grey Flopped in Theaters

His first film after Fountain of Youth, In the Grey, headed to theaters, but it wasn’t successful. The filmmaker reunited with Eiza González for the project, as well as Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, with whom he also worked in the past.

In the Grey premiered in theaters on May 15, but less than a month later, it was already available to rent and purchase on digital. The film only grossed $17 million on a reported $70 million budget.

The box office bomb had been long in the making, as it was filmed in 2023, but it hit theaters three years later. In a recent World of Reel report, it was alleged that In the Grey wasn’t finished, as the film’s reshoots were delayed due to scheduling conflicts, and they never happened, considering the actors’ busy schedules. Even so, despite the fact that critics gave it a 49% “rotten” score. audiences hyped it as entertaining, and it holds an 83% approval rating.

In the Grey attracted attention on digital once it was available, and it’s now in fifth place on the Amazon charts in the U.S., and fourth place on the Apple TV Store, teasing its streaming potential.

Fountain of Youth is streaming on Apple TV.
