Guillermo del Toro Hyped This 50% RT Film as a ‘Horror Origami’ & It’s Getting Redeemed on Streaming

An underrated Osgood Perkins horror film is lighting up the streaming charts. It might even be enough to make some viewers reconsider their initial take on Keeper.

Per FlixPatrol, 2025’s Keeper has officially claimed the number three spot on the list of the top streaming films currently available on Hulu in the United States. If that weren’t enough, Keeper has also claimed the number seven spot on the list of the top streaming content overall between both films and TV, outperforming brand-new breakout hits like the critically acclaimed The Handmaid’s Tale follow-up series, The Testaments.

What 2025’s Keeper Is All About — And Why Critics Couldn’t Stand It (Even If Guillermo del Toro Loved It)

Directed by Osgood Perkins from a screenplay by Nick Lepard, Keeper stars Tatiana Maslany as Liz, a woman who goes to spend a weekend with her boyfriend, Rossif Sutherland’s Doctor Malcolm Westbridge, at his secluded countryside cabin. The attempt at a romantic getaway is soon interrupted by the sudden arrival of Malcolm’s cousin Darren, portrayed by Birkett Turton, and his girlfriend Minka, played by Eden Weiss, though that is hardly the worst turn the weekend takes.

What ensues is a horrifying, mind-bending journey for Liz, who becomes plagued by visions of deceased women, only to be left on her own when Malcolm is called back to work in the city. Eventually, the terrible truth at the heart of her stay comes to light, reframing everything Liz (and viewers) thought she knew about her circumstances.

Upon its release, Keeper failed to make much of an impact at the box office, grossing only $6.2 million during its theatrical run, just barely more than its $6 million production budget, yet far less after distribution fees and cinema shares are paid out. The film was also subject to particularly divisive reviews from critics, with Keeper boasting a mere 50% “rotten” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and only 40% from the audience.

This came as something of a surprise to many at the time, especially considering the names attached to Keeper. Beyond that, there was the fact that the film had received such high praise from the legendary Guillermo del Toro himself, who wrote, “Keeper is pure Perkins. Horror origami that skillfully folds into itself.”

Currently, Perkins and Malsany are headed for a cinematic reunion in the form of The Young People. Written and directed by Perkins, The Young People is expected to offer audiences another tense horror experience, although there is no telling just yet whether it will be more in the vein of Longlegs, Keeper, or something else entirely.

While plot details for Young People remain tightly under wraps, it has been confirmed that the film was developed as part of Perkins’ first-look deal with production studio and distributor Neon. The film will feature a star-studded ensemble cast, with Maslany taking center stage alongside Heather Graham, Nicole Kidman, Lily Collias, Johnny Knoxville, Brendan Hines, Nico Parker, Lola Tung, Cush Jumbo, and Legally Blonde prequel series Elle star, Lexi Minetree. Young People is expected to arrive in theaters some time in this year.

Keeper is currently available for streaming on Hulu in the United States.
