Event Horizon Sequel Finale Will Finally Deliver the Ending the Franchise Deserves

Nearly 30 years after the release of the original Event Horizon (1997), the franchise is approaching the finale of its long-awaited sequel, one that has already teased an ending that will be nothing short of “satisfying.” While the upcoming conclusion appears poised to close a major chapter in the saga, it also raises an important question: Does the finale mark the true end of an era, or merely the beginning of a new one?

In 2025, the Event Horizon franchise experienced an unexpected revival with Event Horizon: Dark Descent from multiple Eisner Award winner Christian Ward and acclaimed sci-fi artist Tristan Jones. The five-issue series served as an official prequel to the 1997 film, finally revealing the true fate of the original Event Horizon crew. Ward returned in 2026 for another journey into the cult-classic universe with Event Horizon: Inferno, this time teaming up with superstar artist Rob Carey to continue expanding the franchise’s mythology.

Currently ongoing, Inferno has released two of its five planned issues, with each issue available for $4.99. Serving as both a spiritual sequel to the film and a follow-up to Dark Descent, the series takes place 200 years after the events of the original movie, returning readers to a universe where space marines battle demonic forces linked to the Event Horizon. Now, IDW Publishing has officially announced the release date for the series’ finale, signaling a well-deserved conclusion to the franchise’s latest chapter.

The Event Horizon: Inferno comic series has so far followed greedy billionaire Daniel Durante as he leads a crew of private space marines to the wreckage of the Event Horizon in search of answers on how to bring his brother back from the afterlife. However, his crew is not entirely on board with his plan. And now, with three issues still pending and issue #3 set for release on July 1, the end of this intense miniseries is now firmly in sight.

Thanks to IDW’s early solicitations, it has now been confirmed that Inferno will wrap up with issue #5 on September 2. The official synopsis for the issue teases: “Daniel Durante thought that he was above the laws of Heaven and Hell. That he could come to this awful place and, as he’d done all his life, take from it what he wanted. Daniel Durante was wrong. Christian Ward and Rob Carey conclude the most satisfying tale of a greedy man getting exactly what he wished for!”

Based on this synopsis and what we already know of Durante’s goals, it seems likely that he will succeed in bringing his brother back from the afterlife, but at a devastating and far too high a cost. As a result, fans shouldn’t expect a happy or neatly wrapped-up ending. Instead, the finale will likely deliver something brutally bleak but thematically fitting for a horror sci-fi franchise as iconic as Event Horizon.

With no current news of any follow-up series after Inferno, it is increasingly possible that this could serve as the franchise’s final chapter, at least for now. While it is unlikely to mark the end of Event Horizon forever, it does feel like the true end of an era, with Inferno clearly positioned to conclude a story that has now spanned 200 years.

The greatest strength of IPs such as Event Horizon, however, is that their central themes of human hubris and the consequences of forbidden discovery make it easy to leave the door thematically cracked open for future stories, even after what feels like a definitive closing chapter.
