For Caroline, the chance to travel and escape her boring life in rural Texas was a major draw of Oliver. A drifter who just travels and cons what he needs, Oliver represents the wider world to Caroline – an alluring and dangerous figure whom she nevertheless can’t move away from.

When the time comes to face the music, Caroline is heartbroken and surprised by Oliver’s choice, tearfully taking the chance to escape that he gives her. Using the skills she picked up from Oliver, Caroline is able to sneak her way back to their stash of money, procure new fake credentials, and make her way to an airport to buy tickets to Ecuador.

This pays off a cute joke she had shared with her father about running away to that country from earlier in the film, while also serving as a final goodbye for her father. There’s also the possibility that Caroline is pregnant, as evidenced by a pregnancy test seen in her hotel room before she makes that trip, with the results left unclear for the audience. All of this sets up Caroline’s final fate.

Although she does seem to escape her past, the final scenes see Caroline still pulling the cons, suggesting that going forward, Caroline will continue to steal – it’s become almost second nature to her. The ending is ambitious enough about her final fate that audiences can take away what they want from it. At least Caroline gets the chance to move on with her life and finally travel like she had wanted to.

Caroline Carolina is ultimately a love story, albeit a tragic one – while also being a somber story about being trapped in society. The film’s opening sequences highlight the allure of Oliver to Caroline, especially once he explains his motivations and why he feels no guilt for robbing larger companies or banks.

It feels like an extension of Caroline’s frustration with her job and life in Texas, setting her up to travel across the country and finally travel alongside Oliver. While they argue at times, and Oliver’s willingness to resort to harsh tactics shakes Caroline, she still loves him and the freedom he represents.

That’s why Caroline never seems to consider turning herself in or abandoning him, despite the pleas of her father once their crimes have been exposed. She’s fallen in love not just with Oliver but the perspective he offers, even if it leaves Caroline increasingly shaken and convinced that they aren’t “good people pretending to be bad,” but the other way around.

The themes of the Samara Weaving film speak to a frustration with a system that can trap people in ruts, without ever fully romanticizing the effect that perspective has on others.
