All-star writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta return this week with a brand-new installment of their best-selling Absolute Batman series on June 17, 2026. While the official release of issue #21 is still several days away, DC has generously unveiled a preview, and based on just two interior pages, it is already clear this won’t just be one of the best issues of the series yet, but one of the greatest Batman comics ever published.
As a quick recap, the last issue ended with the full debut of Jack “The Joker” Grimm’s Robins as they confronted Batman in high-tech mechs. Staying true to the Darkseid-created Absolute Universe’s overarching theme, Snyder and Dragotta have twisted classic Batman lore to the extreme. In Absolute Batman, it is the Joker who adopted and trained the Robins, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Duke Thomas, rather than Bruce Wayne himself.

Absolute Batman #21 sees all of the Robins, barring Duke Thomas, who remains silent throughout the exchange, give Batman one last warning to surrender. Tim Drake delivers the final ultimatum, declaring, “This is your final warning. These are bad odds.” The next panel, a stunning two-page spread, delivers Batman’s response: “These are bad odds. For you.”
While that line is a banger in its own right, it is Dragotta’s depiction of the Dark Knight that truly steals the show. Surrounded by giant Robin-controlled mechs that tower over him, Batman calmly takes his battle stance with his bat-signal-shaped axe in hand, muscles bulging, and his advanced, engineered cape wrapped around his fist to form a spike-like weapon. Topped off with a manic grin across his face, he looks nothing short of feral.
Despite being surrounded by building-sized mechs, Dragotta’s artwork and the sheer aura he captures make this Batman feel even bigger than the machines towering over him. It is a remarkable display of creative ingenuity and artistic skill, as it convincingly positions Batman in the reader’s mind as someone who actually has a chance against these colossal opponents. Now the only question is whether this Batman panel has what it takes to become as legendary as Frank Miller’s iconic cover for the first issue of The Dark Knight Returns (1986).
