A Cool Masters Of The Universe Easter Egg Subtly Answers 1 Major Question About He-Man’s Mother

Warning: Spoilers for Masters of the Universe

An easy-to-miss Easter egg clears up a major question about He-Man’s mother in Masters of the Universe. Although not a major character in the 2026 live-action adaptation, Charlotte Riley’s Queen Marlena was instrumental to Prince Adam’s story, as it was her past that provided the setup for the movie’s biggest deviation from the lore of the He-Man cartoons. Unlike most versions of He-Man, this particular take on the character spent 15 years of his life on Earth.

While Earth does exist in most He-Man stories, Prince Adam is traditionally portrayed as someone who never lived anywhere but in Eternia. But 2026’s Masters of the Universe changed that by revealing that when he was 10 years old, Marlena sent him away to live on Earth along with the Sword of Power, so that both would be safe from Skeletor’s grasp.

As for why she chose Earth or even knew of its existence, the character only offered a brief explanation: As Marlena said, Earth is her “home.” How someone from Earth wound up in a place like Eternia, much less became its queen, wasn’t touched on. But while her backstory wasn’t explained out loud, the movie did offer an answer, albeit subtly.

Masters Of The Universe Confirms Marlena’s Cartoon Backstory Is Canon To The Film

In the early portion of the film when Prince Adam is still a child in Eternia, there’s a quick shot of an astronaut helmet in the background behind the boy and his mother. The helmet is a clear nod to Queen Marlena’s origin story in the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon. In the episode titled “Teela’s Quest,” it’s discovered that she was an astronaut from Earth who crash-landed on Eternia years ago.

In “The Rainbow Warrior,” the show expands on her past, revealing that after rescuing Marlena from the crash of her ship, the Rainbow Explorer, King Randor took her back to the Royal Palace of Eternos, where they formed a romantic relationship. As a result, Marlena chose to remain in Eternia and never returned home to Earth.

By including the astronaut helmet in Masters of the Universe, the movie has indicated that a similar – if not identical – chain of events took place in the canon of the film. It does make sense, after all, considering that Adam and Teela make it from Earth to Eternia through a spaceship as well.

Masters Of The Universe’s He-Man Change Makes Sense Because Of Marlena

Due to the significance of the change, making He-Man into an Eternian refugee stranded on Earth ran the risk of upsetting long-time fans of the franchise. But the movie chose the best-possible path in weaving Earth into He-Man’s journey, which is more than what can be said for the 1987 live-action adaptation that starred Dolph Lundgren. Both versions used Earth to instill a sense of relatability into the character, but only in this version did it feel like an effort was made to root the change in the source material.

Past incarnations of He-Man didn’t spend years trapped living ordinary lives on Earth, but when looking at what had already been established in the wider lore, Adam living there comes across as something that technically could happen in any He-Man story where Eternia is besieged by Skeletor during his youth. And ultimately, that’s what makes it such an organic move for Masters of the Universe. Because Marlena has long been understood to be a native of Earth, her decision to send him there works really well for the film.
