Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is one of the most popular battle shonen series of all-time and, over the last decade, Dragon Ball Super has kept the brand alive for a new generation. Dragon Ball Super expands upon DBZ’s events and pushes Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of Earth’s strongest heroes to unprecedented places that see them taking on Gods and a whole multiverse of powerful opponents.
Dragon Ball Super fans are eagerly awaiting the series’ manga to resume from its prolonged hiatus, and there’s still Dragon Ball Super: Beerus and Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol on the horizon. As Dragon Ball Super sets up its future, it’s the perfect time to revisit some of its most forgotten and obscure trivia.
Future Trunks Gains Privileged Kai Powers
Dragon Ball Super brings back fan-favorite character Future Trunks when his timeline is once again placed in peril. Future Trunks engages in a vicious battle against Goku Black and Future Zamasu but, before this conflict gets fully into gear, the series briefly spends some time filling in the details of what Future Trunks has been up to since he was last seen.
It’s revealed that Future Shin and Future Kibito trained Future Trunks to prevent Future Majin Buu’s awakening. Future Trunks’ clash against Future Dabura and Future Babidi contributes to his Super Saiyan 2 ascension, which most fans know, but Future Trunks also gained basic Kai skills, like rudimentary healing. This is better explored in Dragon Ball Super‘s manga, but it’s still a rather obscure detail.
The Cell Juniors From Dragon Ball Z Return
Goten and Trunks are unfortunately robbed of the opportunity to represent their universe in the Tournament of Power. Rather, they are saddled with rancher duty on Monster Island while Android 17 is away at the competition. The Dragon Ball Super anime doesn’t make a point of checking in with Goten and Trunks during the Tournament of Power.
However, a Bonus Chapter of Dragon Ball Super‘s manga shows the Saiyan duo encounter a group of Cell Juniors on Monster Island. This is a rather seismic development that’s casually handled. It’s satisfying to see Goten and Trunks handle this threat with Super Saiyan strength, considering they never got a chance to fight Cell.
Tuffles Make An Appearance In The Tournament Of Power
Tuffles represent an important piece of Saiyan history, one that’s largely been explored in filler episodes and non-canon stories like the OVA, Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, Super Dragon Ball Heroes, and Dragon Ball GT‘s Baby Saga. Tuffles are an intelligent and technologically advanced race who see their power robbed of them by the more aggressive Saiyans.
The Tournament of Power showcases warriors of many diverse races, including a Tuffle warrior from Universe 2. It’s rare to see a Tuffle front and center in official canon, and Zarbuto doesn’t play a crucial role in the Tournament of Power. Still, this race’s acknowledgment means that Dragon Ball Super might still ignite the Saiyan and Tuffle feud in its future.
Yamoshi, The Original Super Saiyan God, Is Still Out There
Dragon Ball Super reinvents the Super Saiyan power system through the introduction of God ki and totemic transformations like Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue. Goku becomes Dragon Ball Super’s first Super Saiyan God, but Beerus’ original dreams are haunted by a separate individual known as Yamoshi.
Dragon Ball Super has been cagey about Yamoshi, revealing little more than that he’s the original Super Saiyan God. It stands to reason that Yamoshi died long ago, but it’s entirely possible that he’s still out there somewhere. He might even be key to helping Goku, Vegeta, and Broly defeat Black Frieza, either physically or through some psychic communication.
Bulma & Vegeta Have Estranged Siblings
Family is one of Dragon Ball’s most cherished ideals, and it’s always exciting when these heroes are able to expand their family trees. This is why it’s quite surprising when new family members suddenly come out of the woodwork as if they’ve always been around.
2008’s Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! introduces Vegeta’s younger brother, Tarble. It’d be very easy for Tarble to remain exclusive to the anniversary OVA, but he’s explicitly mentioned when the heroes are in need of Saiyans for Goku’s Super Saiyan God ritual.
Additionally, Bulma’s older sister, Tights, also becomes a supporting character who occasionally lends a hand. Tights’ introduction was in Akira Toriyama’s Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, but she’s found her way into Dragon Ball Super, even if most people beforehand weren’t aware of Vegeta’s sister-in-law.
Vegeta Uses Super Saiyan God Power During The “Future” Trunks Saga
Dragon Ball Super’s Super Saiyan Blue is the more colloquial nickname for Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. It stands to reason that Super Saiyan God must first be reached before its successor is achieved. Fans were thus confused when Vegeta ascended to Super Saiyan Blue status alongside Goku, without ever having reached Super Saiyan God.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly finally features Super Saiyan God Vegeta in the anime, but this milestone is actually reached much earlier in Dragon Ball Super’s manga. Vegeta utilizes Super Saiyan God power against Goku Black, and he even pioneers Super Saiyan God-to-Blue switching, a clever strategy that maximizes both transformations.
The Heeter Force Still Technically Has Seven-Three’s Data
The Heeter Force is one of the most curious groups to emerge in Dragon Ball Super. This villainous team has apparently been under Frieza’s thumb for decades, yet they attempt to launch a bold coup against Frieza by manipulating Granolah. It’s easy to forget that one of Granolah’s first actions for the Heeter Force was to bring them the damaged body of Moro’s state-of-the-art OG Soldier Android, Seven-Three.
The Heeter Force have acquired all of Seven-Three’s intel, including useful battle data, that’s yet to come into play. Macki and Oil, the two surviving Heeter Force members, may have even transferred this information over to Frieza. This is incredibly dangerous information in the wrong hands.
Beerus Took A 50-Year Nap During A God Of Destruction Showdown
The Tournament of Power is easily Dragon Ball’s biggest and most important martial arts competition. This event is preceded by a Zen Exhibition Match — or Zeno Expo — that’s meant to set the stage and tease the aggressive battles to come. In Dragon Ball Super‘s manga, it’s the Gods of Destruction that participate in this chaotic free-for-all.
Beerus is targeted by the other Gods because of how he slept for 50 years during a previous Hide and Seek competition that was held by the Gods of Destruction. Beerus’ ability to fall asleep at inopportune times and for extended periods had been established at this point, but half a century is an especially long time to be knocked out.
The Other World Tournament’s Olibu Is Canon
Dragon Ball Super Chapter 104, “The Birth of Saiyaman X,” the manga’s most recent chapter, features a cathartic trip to the Hall of Heroes. This becomes a sweet opportunity for Dragon Ball to give thanks back to many of the franchise’s more public-facing heroes. There are some great gags that come out of this sequence, but the chapter’s biggest moment is arguably when a statue of Olibu appears.
Olibu is a deceased North Galaxy warrior who Goku befriends during Dragon Ball Z’s Other World Tournament. Olibu is said to be a prolific hero who inspired many of Earth’s legends. It’s a big deal for Olibu to be treated as canon because it also means that more Other World Saga filler characters, like Pikkon, now also qualify as canon.
The Grand Supreme Kai Is Still Dormant Inside Buu
Good Buu is one of Dragon Ball Super’s most powerful characters, and yet he’s someone who is often pushed out of battle because he’s just too resilient of a fighter. Dragon Ball Super has repeatedly backed away from opportunities to showcase Buu’s full strength, which makes it easy to forget his moment in the spotlight against Planet-Eater Moro.
The Grand Supreme Kai, who was absorbed by Buu ages ago, is evidently still dormant in his body. The Grand Supreme Kai temporarily commandeers Buu and uses his godly abilities to give Moro a real fight. This will surely be one of Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol’s biggest moments, and it hopefully won’t be Buu’s last moment to shine.
