Chris Pratt’s $303M ‘Titanic Meets Gravity’ Sci-Fi Movie Is A Netflix Streaming Sensation In The US

Chris Pratt‘s sci-fi movie sees a meteoric rise on Netflix.

Pratt’s best movies include quite a few entries from the sci-fi genre. After all, the role that turned his career around came from James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies, where Pratt gave life to Star-Lord, a hero he continues to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pratt also led a trilogy in one of the most iconic sci-fi franchises of all time, the Jurassic Park/World franchise, and recently returned to the genre with Mercy, one of 2026’s new sci-fi movies. Now, one of the actor’s older sci-fi films finds new life on Netflix, becoming an American streaming sensation.

01

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Pratt plays a half-human outlaw who was abducted from Earth as a child and raised by a band of space pirates called the Ravagers. He insists everyone call him by his self-proclaimed outlaw name. What is it?

✓ Correct! Star-Lord — a.k.a. Peter Quill — is the charismatic leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The role transformed Pratt from a sitcom favorite into one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars practically overnight when the first film premiered in 2014.

✗ Miss! The answer is Star-Lord. Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill coined the outlaw name himself, though almost nobody in the galaxy had actually heard of him. “Who?” “Star-Lord, man… legendary outlaw?” remains one of the MCU’s most quoted moments.

02

On Parks and Recreation, Pratt’s lovable goofball Andy Dwyer is the enthusiastic frontman of a band that went through hilariously bad name changes — Scarecrow Boat, Nothing Rhymes with Orange, and more. What is the band’s best-known final name?

✓ Correct! Mouse Rat is the iconic band name that stuck, known for their hit single “5,000 Candles in the Wind” (a.k.a. “Bye Bye Li’l Sebastian”). Andy was originally only supposed to appear in Season 1, but Pratt was so funny that the writers made him a series regular.

✗ Miss! The answer is Mouse Rat. While Scarecrow Boat, Rad Wagon, and many other terrible names were used throughout the show, Mouse Rat was the band’s signature identity. Fun fact: Pratt actually played guitar and sang on the show — those performances were real.

03

In the Jurassic World franchise, Pratt plays velociraptor trainer Owen Grady, who raised a pack of four raptors from birth. He has a deep bond with the pack’s alpha, who becomes central to every film in the trilogy. What is the alpha raptor’s name?

✓ Correct! Blue is the clever velociraptor with a distinctive blue stripe who became the emotional heart of the Jurassic World trilogy. Delta, Echo, and Charlie are the other three raptors in Owen’s pack, but Blue is the only one who survives all three films.

✗ Miss! The answer is Blue. All four options — Blue, Delta, Echo, and Charlie — are raptors in Owen’s pack, but Blue is the alpha and the one with the deep personal bond with Owen. She even became a mother in Jurassic World Dominion.

04

Pratt voiced the cheerful, perfectly ordinary construction worker who accidentally becomes “The Special” — the prophesied hero destined to defeat the evil Lord Business and save the LEGO universe. What is this character’s name?

✓ Correct! Emmet Brickowski is the lovably average hero of The LEGO Movie (2014). Fun twist: Pratt also voiced the villainous Rex Dangervest in The LEGO Movie 2, making option C a sneaky trick answer — it’s also a Chris Pratt character, just not the original hero!

✗ Miss! The answer is Emmet Brickowski. Benny is the 1980s spaceman, Vitruvius is Morgan Freeman’s wizard character, and Rex Dangervest is actually another Pratt character from the sequel. Emmet’s theme song “Everything Is Awesome” became an inescapable earworm.

05

Before becoming an action star, Pratt appeared in the 2011 Brad Pitt film Moneyball, playing a real Major League Baseball player — a catcher-turned-first-baseman who was terrified of playing his new position. Who did Pratt portray?

✓ Correct! Pratt played Scott Hatteberg, the Oakland Athletics catcher whose nerve damage forced a switch to first base. For the role, Pratt gained weight and nailed the everyman vulnerability of a player fighting to stay in the game. It was an early sign of his dramatic range beyond comedy.

✗ Miss! The answer is Scott Hatteberg. David Justice was played by Stephen Bishop, Chad Bradford by Royce Clayton, and Jeremy Giambi by Nick Porrazzo. Pratt’s portrayal of the anxiety-ridden Hatteberg was one of Moneyball’s most endearing subplots.

06

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), Pratt voiced the iconic Nintendo plumber. The film became a massive hit, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide. Who voiced Mario’s brother Luigi in the film?

✓ Correct! Charlie Day voiced Luigi, perfectly capturing the nervous, lovable younger brother energy. Jack Black voiced Bowser, Seth Rogen played Donkey Kong, and Keegan-Michael Key was Toad. The film’s all-star cast helped make it the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.

✗ Miss! The answer is Charlie Day. Jack Black stole scenes as the villainous Bowser (and sang “Peaches”), Seth Rogen voiced Donkey Kong, and Keegan-Michael Key played Toad. Day’s anxious Luigi was the perfect comedic foil to Pratt’s heroic Mario.

07

Pratt took a darker turn starring as Navy SEAL Commander James Reece in The Terminal List, an Amazon Prime Video thriller about a soldier seeking revenge after his entire platoon is ambushed. The series is based on a best-selling novel series. Who wrote the books?

✓ Correct! Jack Carr, a former Navy SEAL himself, wrote The Terminal List novel series. Pratt and Carr became close friends, and Pratt served as an executive producer on the show. The series was a massive hit for Amazon, and a prequel series is in development.

✗ Miss! The answer is Jack Carr. While Vince Flynn (Mitch Rapp series), Brad Thor, and Tom Clancy are all legendary thriller authors, it was former Navy SEAL Jack Carr who created James Reece. Carr’s real military background gave the stories an authentic edge that attracted Pratt to the project.

08

Before Hollywood, a 19-year-old Pratt was living out of a van in Maui, Hawaii, waiting tables and hanging out on the beach. He was discovered by a director who cast him in a short horror film called Cursed Part 3. Who discovered him?

✓ Correct! Actress and director Rae Dawn Chong (Tommy Chong’s daughter) discovered Pratt while he was waiting tables at a Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant in Maui. She cast him in her short film, launching a career that would eventually lead to billion-dollar franchises. One of Hollywood’s wildest origin stories.

✗ Miss! The answer is Rae Dawn Chong. James Gunn would later direct him in Guardians of the Galaxy, Judd Apatow produced Parks and Recreation, and Greg Mottola directed other comedies — but it was Rae Dawn Chong who first spotted Pratt waiting tables in Hawaii and launched his career.

Are you a legendary outlaw — or did you just hear of Star-Lord for the first time?

At the time of writing, Passengers is the 4th most-watched movie on Netflix in the United States. Pratt’s sci-fi movie debuted on the streaming service nationwide on Monday, June 1. As such, it only took a few days for the film to climb the streamer’s charts and leave other exciting movies behind. Passengers currently ranks higher than fellow sci-fi movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Michael B. Jordan’s Creed and Creed II, Emily Blunt’s The Girl on the Train, and more. The only three films above it in the US are Creed III, GOAT, and the new Netflix Original movie The Crash.

Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) and Jim (Chris Pratt) kissing in the water in Passengers

Passengers was released in theaters on December 21, 2016, now finding new life as a Netflix hit in the United States almost a full decade later. The sci-fi movie stars Pratt as Jim Preston, a man who is woken up from suspended hibernation nearly a century before what was planned. Tired of being alone on a spaceship on a 120-year ride to a new planet, Jim wakes up Jennifer Lawrence’s Aurora Lane, and a complicated journey starts from there. Passengers was directed by Silo‘s Morten Tyldum from a screenplay written by Jon Spaihts, who co-wrote Denis Villeneuve’s first two Dune movies.

Passengers finished its worldwide box office run with $303.1 million. Based on a reported budget of 110 million, Pratt and Lawrence’s sci-fi movie needed to land between $220 million and $275 million to break even. Passengers was a success. However, the same cannot be said for its reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the 2016 sci-fi movie that is now trending on Netflix sits at an abysmal 30% critics’ score, earning the dreaded Rotten label. Passengers‘ audience score is higher, at a decent 63% after over 50,000 ratings, which helps explain why it has become a Netflix hit in the United States.

Passengers continues a great year for Netflix when it comes to sci-fi movies. 2026’s War Machine, a Netflix Original movie starring Reacher‘s Alan Ritchson, was recently announced to get a sequel after breaking into the streamer’s all-time top 10. Netflix also has new sci-fi movies, like Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn, on the way. Given how Passengers has not been out on the streaming service for a week yet, the sci-fi movie’s placement on Netflix’s US streaming chart could change over the weekend, allowing Pratt’s nationwide hit to climb even higher than it already has.
