The Odyssey Officially Gets a Rare Christopher Nolan Rating

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is officially rated R. The adaptation of the ancient Greek epic is the fifth movie in Nolan’s 28-year directing career to earn such a rating.

Nolan’s first three movies (Following, Memento, and Insomnia) were each rated R, but then Nolan began making bigger studio movies starting with Batman Begins in 2005. Those big-budget projects needed to ensure the largest possible audience and aimed for less severe ratings.

However, now that Nolan has secured his reputation as a director who can still pull an audience with his name, he seems to be returning to his previous form. Oppenheimer was Nolan’s first R-rated movie in 20 years, and now The Odyssey makes it two back-to-back.
