Optimus Prime is easily the most iconic of the Autobots, with the faction’s usual leader appearing across various timelines and continuities in the Transformers franchise. However, while he usually towers over most of his Decepticon enemies in terms of strength, he’s far from the strongest Autobot. In fact, some of the most powerful heroic Cybertronians tend to be incredibly obscure.
Many supremely powerful Autobots were seen in the classic Generation 1 anime. With most of these characters having combined forms or Super modes, these Autobots embody just how much the franchise went down the Super Robot mecha anime path.
God Ginrai Isn’t Actually Optimus Prime
God Ginrai is the fully-powered form of Super Ginrai, who is himself an upgraded version of Ginrai. On top of that, Ginrai’s design is the spitting image of the original Optimus Prime, with the “Transtector” body based on the former Autobot leader.
Initially controlled by a human named Ginrai who utilized “Chokon power” to control this Transtector, the Cybertronian body later developed a spark of sentience of its own, becoming a fully-fledged Transformer. Using Chokon power to mystically heal himself or empower his attacks, God Ginrai can fly thanks to his combination with the God Bomber armored truck.
Likewise, he can unleash attacks such as the God Punch and God Fire Guts, with the latter turning him into a gigantic ball of flame. His armored form also has a gigantic shoulder cannon, giving him even extra firepower to take on enemies such as Overlord.
Dai Atlas is the Last G1 Anime Autobot Leader
Dai Atlas was the new Autobot leader in the single-episode OVA, Transformers: Zone. Meant to be an entire series, it was the final animated G1 entry, and introduced characters known as the Powered Masters.
Dai Atlas was one of them, with this granting him immense size and the power to manipulate energy. Along with a big blaster, he wields the Z-sword, the latter of which is potent against even the might of the Decepticon Combiners.
Along with his robot mode, Dai Atlas can transform into a jet, a drill tank and a battle base that can house smaller Micromaster Transformers. Easily his greatest ability is to unite with Sonic Bomber and Roadfire to become “Big Powered,” a massive shuttle that can rain devastation down on Decepticons. Even though he was barely seen, he was definitely a major force among the Autobots, with his toy being a rare gem for collectors.
Fortress Maximus Was Powerful in the US and Japan
While he was only a regular-sized robot in the Marvel comic books, Fortress Maximus was a massive battleship of a robot in the US cartoon and the Japanese anime, Transformers: The Headmasters. There, his size dwarfed everyone except his Decepticon rival, Scorponok, and his battleship and city alternate modes were loaded with towers of cannons.
These modes gave him incredible durability, and for truly tenacious enemies, he could launch the “Full Burst” attack that emitted all of his armaments against targets. The Japanese anime also gave him the Master Sword, which could cut through almost anything.
Unfortunately, he also requires the Master Sword to transform into robot mode, which is a handicap that Scorponok doesn’t share. On top of this, Cerebros, who transforms into Fortress Maximus’ head, also turns into a command tower for Fort Max’s city mode, which is not the most versatile alternate mode.
Victory Saber Combines the Might of Two Autobots
Victory Saber is the combined form of Autobot leader Star Saber and the bestial Victory Leo, the latter of whom was actually a rebuilt version of Ginrai. Appearing in Transformers: Victory, this transformation makes Star Saber even more powerful than he already was, adding further armor and a massive blaster called the V-Lock Cannon. His Saber Blade is just as trusty, with the Autobot’s stats becoming maxed out.
Victory Saber is able to fly in space for over 30,000 miles before refueling, making him incredibly efficient at using energon for such a large robot. His greatest attack is the Victory Burn, which gathers ambient energy before channeling it all through the Saber Blade to create a powerful, energy-infused strike. This power is what allowed him to take down the evil Deathsaurus and his planet-destroying fortress by the end of the anime’s story.
Star Convoy is the Strongest Optimus Prime
Also known as Star Optimus Prime in the West, Star Convoy is a powerful reincarnation of the most notable Autobot leader. Able to use the power of the Zodiac and the Silver Matrix, he can transform into both a futuristic Cybetronian semi-truck and a gigantic battle base, with former successor Hot Rod now helping him as a Micromaster partner.
These are far from his most important powers, however, as this version of Optimus Prime truly embodies the power of the Matrix of Leadership like never before. Star Convoy can manipulate supernova energy to devastating effect, whereas the use of the Silver Matrix can revive his fallen Autobot comrades.
When uniting the power of the Matrix with his Ion Blaster, he can decimate and disintegrate enemies with a single blast. This includes characters such as the Chaos Bringer Unicron, allowing Prime to light the Autobots’ darkest hour like never before.
Grandus is the Most Obscure of the Autobot Titans
Appearing in the Transformers: Return of Convoy toyline that also introduced Star Convoy, Grandus is one of the lesser-known Autobot Titans. Boasting colossal strength and incredible durability, the character can cause earthquakes and other ecological events by merely moving.
Transforming from a massive robot to a base and an aircraft carrier, he’s impenetrable in any of these forms and loaded with weapons such as rocket launchers. If that weren’t enough, he has an “invincible combination,” wherein he combines with Sky Garry and Star Convoy.
This is the Battlestar attack base, and one of the strongest mobile weapons from throughout the Transformers franchise. Of course, this comes with the caveat of an infamously boxy and simplistic toy, making him somewhat less impressive-looking than his fellow Titans.
Vector Prime Can Travel Through Time
Vector Prime appeared in the anime Transformers: Cybertron, which was the final entry in the Unicron Trilogy of anime. Established as one of the original 13 Transformers, he was originally tasked by Primus himself to combat the power of Unicron.
Incredibly long-lived and wise, the character’s powerful Terminus Blade is part of a power that he has over all other Transformers. Vector Prime can outright cut holes in reality, allowing him to travel throughout space and time.
This is his role in Transformers: Cybertron, as he hailed from the ancient past before coming to the present. The ability to go through the multiverse at will is something that no other Autobot can do, explaining why Vector is even more versatile than Optimus and his other Matrix-bearing successors.
Omega Supreme is the First Autobot Titan
Standing at 60 feet tall in robot mode, Omega Supreme is immensely strong, with his clawed arm able to unleash 300,000 of force. Almost every inch of his body is weaponized, with a 360-revolving turret on his robot mode head that can fire precisely at a target that’s even 50 miles away.
Immune to the elements, he can also transform into a sprawling alternate mode that’s comprised of different parts, with the train-tank operating separately from the rocket and its launch base. Along with supplemental missile silos, Omega Supreme has blinding light projections that can fool or disarm any opponent.
He also has a force field that’s almost as impervious as he is, meaning that only fellow Titans pose a threat to him. His only real drawback is that, unlike many of the other Autobot Titans in Generation 1, he lacks a smaller partner robot to assist him in either mode.
Metroplex is Located in Chattanooga, Tennessee
Introduced in the third season of The Transformers, Metroplex was actually a portion of Autobot City, which debuted in The Transformers: The Movie. This location is near Lookout Mountain in TN, with Metroplex being its most pivotal component. Even more durable than other Autobot Titans, it requires a massive nuclear blast to so much as dent the character’s armor.
In robot mode, city mode and battle station mode, he’s equipped with MASER cannons, ion rifles and anti-matter projectors to combat any incoming enemies. Durable and versatile, Metroplex has three smaller partner robots in the form of Scarmper, Slammer and Six-Gun.
He’s also far more intelligent than the Decepticon Trypticon, who’s much more of a dumb brute in comparison. The only issue is that, due to his size, Metroplex requires a transformation cog to convert, which is why he didn’t transform in The Transformers: The Movie.
Primus is the God of the Transformers
The progenitor of the Cybetronian species as a whole, Primus’ alternate mode is the planet Cybertron itself, with the veritable god of light being the righteous brother of the evil Unicron. Able to give life to Transformers, his powers are the inverse of Unicron’s, with the Matrix of Leadership and the Key to Vector Sigma being conduits of his life-giving power.
His consciousness is split across space and time, giving him supernatural awareness and eons of wisdom. Primus is considered an Autoobt due to his own heroic nature and, as mentioned, the Autobot Matrix of Leadership is connected to him.
Likewise, his most notable children honor him with the “Prime” suffix, and there are no Decepticon Primes. While centuries of war and the use of his own life-giivng energon can weaken him, Primus is easily the greatest being in the Transformers mythos.
