Warning: SPOILERS ahead for One Piece season 3 and Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga!Netflix’s One Piece season 3 is going to change the way you see Luffy forever thanks to a shocking, brutal battle that’s fast approaching. One Piece season 3 will be taking the live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga to Alabasta, the home of Princess Nefertari Vivi, whose kingdom is being threatened by the criminal enterprise Baroque Works. Season 3 will focus on the Straw Hat Pirates’ attempt to defeat the group.
However, One Piece season 2 ended by teasing just how difficult this task is going to be. Not only will Luffy and his crew be up against some of the most powerful members of the organization, but they’ll also have to fight their leader, Crocodile. As season 3 develops, the show will reveal more about Baroque Works’ operations in the kingdom and their larger goals.
This will, inevitably, lead to a fight between Luffy and Crocodile. In the manga, this happens outside the city of Rainbase, which served as the main headquarters for Baroque Works. After escaping their captivity, the Straw Hats begin their journey to the capital city of Alubarna, they’re stopped by Crocodile. Luffy tells his crew to leave while he fights Baroque Works’ leader.
However, the results are brutal: Luffy ends up getting his entire body impaled by Crocodile’s hook. The antagonist leaves him for dead in the desert, and, for quite some time, his fate ends up being unknown. His fellow Straw Hats are completely unaware, leaving much of the fight in Alubarna up to them.
Live-Action One Piece Cannot Shy Away From Luffy’s Injury
Luffy getting horrifyingly injured by Crocodile is an important part of the Alabasta Arc, not just for the story, but for the protagonist himself. Other characters in One Piece have tried and failed to incapacitate Luffy, who always ends up bouncing back from whatever they throw at him. Here, though, things are quite different because of the extent of his injury.
The fight proves that Luffy can be beaten, and that he’s not as invincible as his Devil Fruit power leads many to believe. Although he’s managed to best a number of other powerful villains, from Arlong to Mr. 3, Crocodile shows that he’s nowhere near as strong as some of the most powerful Devil Fruit users and Warlords that exist in the Grand Line.

One Piece Live-Action Will Fully Switch Genres In Season 3
One Piece’s upcoming season three is set to bring a major shift in genre, as the live-action adaptation transforms into an action thriller.
It also shows that fights in One Piece can get dark, despite the more comedic, adventurous nature of the series. While it’s not the darkest moment in One Piece, it’s a shockingly brutal one that puts Luffy out of commission for quite some time. His injury is severe, and neither the manga nor the anime shy away from this fact in their portrayal of it.
It’s the first major battle that Luffy loses, too, showing that, despite being a protagonist who always arrives to help his friends, he’s still capable of losing. His powers put him at a major advantage against a number of other antagonists he comes across, but, due to Crocodile’s strength, he ends up meeting his match.
Seeing Luffy’s Injury In Live-Action Will Be Shocking
What makes Luffy’s injury all the more important is just how shocking it’s going to look. Live-action One Piece hasn’t shied away from the level of violence found in the manga, translating it onscreen almost entirely from the source material. But it’s also been somewhat more brutal, killing characters like Merry and the Unluckies, who survive in the manga.
Because of this level of unflinching violence, One Piece season 3 seems destined to show Crocodile impaling Luffy in a very graphic way. While it probably won’t push the show past its TV-14 rating, it’ll still be a shocking enough moment to leave an impact on viewers. This is especially because it’ll be shown in live-action, making it more discomforting.
Luffy’s first fight with Crocodile and the subsequent injury he sustains seems destined to be a terrifyingly memorable part of One Piece season 3. It’ll be one of the toughest parts of the show to watch. However, the subsequent events in Alubarna will more than make up for Luffy’s first ever defeat.
