Witch Hat Atelier Episode 12 Review: Evil is Rooted in the Magic Coco Loves

Witch Hat Atelier treads even deeper into its darkest arc yet. Back in Episode 11, young witches Agott, Richeh, and Euini embarked on their second apprenticeship trial within the Serpentback Cave. However, the anime’s newest episode introduces difficulties that involve far more than just knowing the right spells to make it through.

Witch Hat Atelier’s penultimate Episode 12 — titled “The Shadow of Romonon” — is centered around reflection and testing one’s worth. Its inspiring message doesn’t just allow troubled witchlings to pave themselves a hopeful path forward, but also reveals a more sinister truth that bleeds into the anime’s overarching storyline.

Witch Hat Atelier Episode 12 opens with another ominous history lesson from Qifrey. This time, he details an ancient society that was rich in magical artistry yet terribly exclusive. It’s a piece of worldbuilding that deepens the anime’s already expansive lore as well as its core narrative.

The lost city of Romonon was full of proud witches who created the Serpentback Cave to deter unworthy travelers from their gates. Guarded by their protective measures, Romonon’s denizens got what they wanted. However, very soon, they were left with no one else to cast their judgment on but each other.

One by one, the ancient witches sought out those who did not meet their high standards and deemed them more fit to decorate their precious city as golden statues. And so, golden statues they became until Romonon eventually collapsed under the weight of its own hubris.

The dark history of the Romonon reflects the current nature of the Pointed Caps’ society, as the Romonons’ insidious judgment exists among many of the witches today.

Episode 12’s title alone references how history is repeating itself despite the Knights Moralis’ strict fixation with avoiding the mistakes of the past. The laws that have kept Outsiders from learning the secrets of magic inadvertently became the Pointed Caps’ version of the Serpentback Cave.

The second trial made for apprentices, dubbed “The Sincerity of the Shield,” is more or less a modern method of weeding out the unworthy. The parallel is only furthered when Euini points out that the second trial is held on the very road that the Romonons used to cast their own outsiders away.

Euini Discovers the Magic of Finding His Worth

Witch Hat Atelier Episode 12 unveils more of Richeh’s backstory, showing how her former mentor harshly discouraged her creativity. Fortunately, Richeh stuck true to who she was and eventually found herself under the tutelage of Qifrey, who nurtured her unique qualities.

Richeh is a victim of the Pointed Caps’ strict values, but she was never in any danger of losing herself. In fact, it quickly becomes clear that she and Agott are equals in both talent and confidence despite being one another’s foil.

Both girls possess high chances of passing the second trial using their own methods of genius. The one who’s been most affected by society’s harsh judgment, particularly the verbal abuse of his own mentor, is Euini.

Euini repeatedly brings up the episode’s keyword: worth. His main conflict is that he’s unable to believe in himself. Due to the rain of constant insults and mistreatment from his mentor, Kukrow, he has developed severe scopophobia and begins the episode with zero confidence in his own skills.

Passing the second trial hinges on being able to draw in front of others. However, when people are watching him, Euni’s hands shake uncontrollably and hinder his ability to make Casting Seals. He nearly resigns to failing again until Richeh speaks up to encourage him to forsake the “correct” answers he’s memorized and to forge a path forward by being who he is.

Euini, after realizing that he was getting in his own way, eventually succeeded. He was able to alter the cloak that disguised him as a Myrphon and turn it into something that supposedly hides him from view.

It’s not made clear exactly how the spell functions, as the other characters still behave as though they can still see Euini — albeit with a face covered in shadows — even when he activates the cloak. So the audience is left to assume that Euini is completely hidden from sight. Nonetheless, using his altered cloak allows him to focus and draw without feeling the weight of being watched.

Witch Hat Atelier is great at making its viewership feel genuine sympathy and pride for all its child characters when they overcome their individual struggles. Episode 10 did a phenomenal job with portraying Tartah’s triumph over his Silverwash, making it feel like a real victory.

Although Euini’s story wasn’t treated with the same level of depth and detail, seeing him cast his own magic to solve the problem ahead of him was an emotional step towards building the self-worth that Kukrow deprived him of.

Unfortunately, the heartfelt lessons of Episode 12 are interrupted by the appearance of Sasaran (voiced by Kellen Goff in the Witch Hat Atelier English dub). The Brimmed Cap witch manages to catch Alaira off guard and transport her to an unknown location, yanking the story back to Witch Hat Atelier’s overarching plot.

As the penultimate episode Witch Hat Atelier’s first season, Episode 12 doesn’t feel as though it was working up to anything final until the last few minutes. Agott, Richeh, and Euini watch helplessly as their test proctor is consumed in Sasaran’s cloak and vanishes.

The moment is sudden and short, but it’s an effective cliffhanger that transitions into what will be an intense finale, as the second trial will turn into something far more than anything that Coco and her friends bargained for.

Witch Hat Atelier is consistent with portraying the duality of magic. It’s a force that can be as beautiful as it is terrifying. Interestingly, during Episode 12’s opening scene, Coco insists that magic is something meant to “make the world vibrant.” However, the lesson that Euini learned holds a message that says otherwise.

Magic is what an individual witch makes it. It has its wonders, but, on its own, it is simply a force that exists. With that logic, the people who wield it can choose to stain the world as black as ink or color it brighter. There is just too much corruption for Coco’s journey to be the Ghibli-esque tale that she once dreamed about.
