We’re Officially 2 Years Away From A $1.8 Billion Superhero Franchise’s Return

Superhero movies have been a staple of Hollywood for decades, but its really been in the 21st century that they’ve taken off like never before. We’ve been treated to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, multiple Spider-Man franchises, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Fox’s X-Men series, and several iterations of the DC universe.

But Marvel and DC superheroes are not the only ones who’ve graced the big screen during this time. The Spirit, Hellboy, and The Green Hornet are among the non-Marvel or DC comic book adaptations Hollywood has made. James Gunn directed Super and produced Brightburn, both of which are original stories about superpowered people. Will Smith did Hancock, Chris Evans did Push, and Michael B. Jordan did Chronicle, too.

All those movies were done in live-action, but animation has remained a rich medium for superhero storytelling as well. Marvel and DC have both found lots of success in this realm, while Hollywood has even gone the original route with movies like Megamind, which spawned a franchise. Another original superhero animated movie franchise is getting close to returning.

That’s thanks to Disney and Pixar planning to release Incredibles 3 in exactly two years, with the film confirmed for a theatrical debut on June 16, 2028. The superhero franchise began in 2004 and returned with a bang in 2018, prompting the studios to figure out how to bring the Incredibles family/team back for another adventure, as they will soon.

Everything We Know About Incredibles 3

Disney announced the franchise’s return originally in 2024 at D23, with the current 2028 release date only becoming official in 2026. With two years to go until Incredibles 3‘s arrival, there is still a lot of time left for Disney and Pixar to reveal more information about it. As it currently stands, the exact plot has yet to be revealed.

What is known is that the entire Parr family will return. Bob/Mr. Incredible, Helen/Elastigirl, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack are all confirmed. It is likely that Frozone and Edna Mode are featured in some capacity, as other heroes from Incredibles 2‘s ending could also pop up.

You’re the steady hand, the voice of reason, and the friend who never, ever leaves someone behind.

The familiar faces at the center of the story are hardly a surprise, but Pixar did create unexpected headlines when it was announced that Incredibles 3 has a new director. The franchise’s original creator, Brad Bird, had to step aside to focus on a different project. He still wrote the script, but it will now be The Good Dinosaur and Elemental‘s Peter Sohn who directs.

As for where Incredibles 3 currently stands, it is confirmed that voice recording sessions have already started. Elastigirl actress Holly Hunter revealed to ScreenRant that she started recording Incredibles 3 in March 2026. Mr. Incredible’s Craig T. Nelson and any other returning or new cast members likely have also begun work on the sequel at this point, as everyone hopes to make another incredible animated superhero movie.

Incredibles 3 Has Lofty Expectations

After all, Incredibles 3 must avoid disappointing. The first is considered one of Pixar’s best movies, and the sequel is also held in high regard. There will be high expectations for the threequel to not have a dip in quality (especially without Bird directing) and continue the $1.8 billion franchise’s winning ways.

Disney and Pixar are certainly hoping Incredibles 3 exceeds Incredibles 2‘s record-breaking $1.2 billion box office. At the time, it became the fastest animated movie to make $1 billion worldwide. It then went on to become Pixar’s highest-grossing movie, a record that now belongs to Inside Out 2 ($1.6 billion).

The question is whether Incredibles 3 can match this type of performance without as much nostalgic build up. Pixar took 14 years making Incredibles 2, which is the longest gap between franchise installments for the studio. Incredibles 3 is still requiring fans to wait a decade, so perhaps there will be enough time away from the superhero series for it to become another smash hit.
