The Star Wars universe contains many powerful Force users, with many tapping into the dark side to achieve their goals. The allure of the dark side lies in its promise of power, allowing its followers to wield incredible abilities that surpass those of the light side. However, this power often comes at a cost, as the dark side corrupts and consumes its users, leading them down a path of destruction.
Throughout Star Wars history, several dark side users have risen to prominence, leaving a lasting impact on the galaxy. These individuals have harnessed the dark side to achieve awe-inspiring and terrifying feats. Devastation left in their wake and the fear they instill in others mark their legacies. The most powerful dark side Force users showcase their immense strength and influence with no remorse, making them adversaries to be feared and respected.
The Third Sister Was Powerful but Extremely Reckless
Reva Semander was a youngling at the Jedi temple on the night of Order 66. The only member of her class to survive the night’s horrific events, Reva was forever changed by what she witnessed. The young girl eventually joined the Inquisitorius as the Third Sister, hunting Jedi and serving the Empire. All along, Reva secretly plotted to kill Darth Vader, knowing that he was the one responsible for the extermination of the Jedi.
As powerful a Jedi hunter as she was, however, Reva grossly overestimated her own abilities. Upon attacking Vader, Reva quickly learned she did not stand a chance against the Sith Lord. Vader easily dispatched the Third Sister without her landing a single blow on him. Though she could take on a Jedi, Reva’s power was nothing compared to a true dark side user.
Barriss Offee Had a Lot of Potential as a Dark Side User
Barriss Offee spent most of her life as a member of the Jedi Order, training under the watchful eye of the powerful Master Luminara Unduli. While she helped the Jedi achieve several meaningful victories during the Clone Wars, Barriss grew disillusioned with the Order. Shortly before the war’s end, Barriss orchestrated a bombing at the temple, leading to her arrest and imprisonment.
Barriss didn’t fully embrace the dark side until after the rise of the Empire, when the Sith recruited her as a member of the new Inquisitorius. It didn’t take long for her to realize the perils of joining the dark side, leading her to abandon the other Inquisitors and live out the rest of her life as a Force healer on a remote planet. While her time as a dark side user was brief, Barriss was nevertheless a powerful Force-wielder who could have done extensive damage had she remained in the darkness.
The Second Sister Was One of the Most Powerful Inquisitors
Trilla Suduri was a Jedi Padawan at the time of Order 66. Unlike most other members of the Order, Trilla and her master, Cere Junda, managed to escape slaughter at the hands of the new Imperial forces. However, Imperials eventually captured Junda, who tortured her for information about other surviving Jedi, leading her to give up her Padawan’s location. Enraged by her master’s betrayal, Trilla accepted an offer to join the Inquisitorius as the Second Sister.
During the events of Star Wars: Jedi – Fallen Order, the Second Sister proves herself to be among the most powerful members of the Inquisitiorius. She deftly defeats Cal Kestis in almost all of their duels, showing herself strong with the Force and a lightsaber. Among the other Inquisitors, only the Grand Inquisitor himself is more powerful than Trilla. Even so, her power is nothing compared to that of Darth Vader, who easily kills her when she turns against him.
The Grand Inquisitor Ranked Among the Best Jedi Hunters
The Grand Inquisitor is an unnamed fallen Jedi Temple guard who, along with several other surviving Jedi, pledged himself to the new Empire and formed the Inquisitorius. As the group’s leader, he became one of the best Jedi killers in the galaxy. That said, the Grand Inquisitor couldn’t defeat the rogue Jedi Kanan Jarrus, resulting in his death at the end of Star Wars Rebels‘ first season.
The Grand Inquisitor was the most powerful member of the Inquisitorius by far, answering directly to the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Although not technically a Sith himself, the Grand Inquisitor was skilled in the dark side of the Force, using it to his advantage while hunting Jedi. His skill with a double-sided blade and his deep power in the Force helped make the Grand Inquisitor one of the most powerful people in the galaxy in the years between the prequel and original Star Wars trilogies.
Kylo Ren Struggled Between the Light Side and the Dark Side
Ben Solo is the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa and was one of Luke Skywalker’s pupils in the New Jedi Order. However, his mind was corrupted by the sinister Supreme Leader Snoke, causing him to betray his master and pledge himself to the First Order and the dark side of the Force. Adopting the name Kylo Ren, he became the leader of a group of Force-wielders known as the Knights of Ren and spent the next several years fighting the Resistance and the New Republic as the First Order’s chief enforcer.
Despite his relatively limited time in the franchise, Kylo Ren proves to be one of the strongest fighters in Star Wars — and one of the best practitioners of the dark side of the Force. In his very first scene, he demonstrates a brand-new Force ability, stopping a blaster bolt in mid-air. He also uses several other powerful and novel Force powers, including mind reading, Force healing and more. While he eventually turned back to the light side, Kylo Ren was one of the dark side’s strongest wielders during his days as Snoke’s apprentice.
The Stranger Is More Powerful Than a Team of Jedi
The Stranger is a brand-new character introduced during the events of The Acolyte. He was once the Padawan learner of Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh, but became disillusioned with the Order and left. After faking his death, the former Jedi trained in the dark side of the Force, adopting the moniker of “The Stranger” to mark his distinction from both the Jedi and the Sith. However, he still kept to many of the same Sith traditions, including training a new apprentice in hopes of supplanting his master.
Although not officially confirmed, it is implied that the Stranger learned his dark side abilities from the legendary Sith Lord Darth Plagueis. If this is the case, Plagueis’s training paid off, with the Stranger demonstrating incredible skill with the Force in The Acolyte. His dark side abilities helped him to defeat an entire team of Jedi Knights sent to find him. By the end of the series, the Stranger had killed more Jedi than many other famous Sith Lords who have appeared in the Star Wars franchise.
Mother Talzin Used the Force Differently Than Others
Mother Talzin is one of the few dark side wielders who was never an official Sith. Talzin was the leader of a coven of witches depicted in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. However, in the Star Wars galaxy, magic is considered a perversion of the Force itself. Witches like Talzin use the Force in bizarre and unseemly ways, tapping into the dark side to fuel their power.
Talzin is by far the most powerful witch in Star Wars, using her abilities to restore Darth Maul’s power and even transform Savage Oppress into a murderous beast. Her powers were even strong enough to nearly kill Count Dooku, who just barely survived her attacks. Talzin may not have wielded a lightsaber, but her skill with the dark side of the Force was more than enough to help her accomplish her villainous goals.
Supreme Leader Snoke Was a Manifestation of Darth Sidious’s Power
The Star Wars sequel trilogy includes a new conniving villain in Supreme Leader Snoke. He was originally conceived as the main villain of the trilogy and is therefore shown to have incredible Force abilities that rival those of even the most powerful Star Wars villains. However, the character is unceremoniously murdered by his pupil, Kylo Ren, during the events of The Last Jedi, leaving his full potential unrealized.
Supreme Leader Snoke is shown to have incredible mastery over the dark side, throwing individuals across the room with a mere wave of his hand. He also demonstrates some of the most powerful Force lightning ever put to screen, as seen during his interaction with Rey in The Last Jedi. However, it is later revealed that Snoke was nothing more than an artificial creation of Emperor Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, severely stunting the character’s potential to become one of the most powerful dark side wielders in the franchise.
Savage Opress’s Pure Rage Lends Itself to the Dark Side
A long-lost brother of Darth Maul, Savage Opress is a brutal warrior in touch with Nightsister magick. Nightsister witches employed dark magick to give Opress the ability to better serve Ventress, allowing him to tap into the Force in a raw way rarely seen. Opress eventually joined his brother as an acolyte of the dark side by force in accordance with the Rule of Two.
Because Opress’s use of the Force is so raw and unchecked, this allows him to take on even more powerful Sith and dark side users, such as Ventress and Dooku. When he succumbed to his rage due to abusive training, he took it out on Dooku and Ventress at the same time, which is not an easy feat. Opress also throws his weapons with the Force, employing lethal combat training he learned as a tribal leader.
Asajj Ventress Assassinated Her Way to the Top of the Order
It’s always tragic to see someone fall from the light side, and Ventress’s case is no different. Asajj Ventress grew up in horrible circumstances, ripped away from her family, enslaved, and then orphaned. As a Jedi Padawan, she was orphaned again after the death of her Jedi Master. Ventress then embraced the dark side and was eventually recruited by Count Dooku, aka Darth Tyranus.
Asajj Ventress is a master of Jar’Kai, a style of lightsaber dueling she adopted after taking her first master’s lightsaber and using it alongside her own. While her combat prowess and assassination skills are terrifyingly impressive, her Force-wielding is really where she shines. Ventress uses the Force to leap great distances and hop around her enemies, making it impossible for them to hit her, and she is also skilled in telekinesis. Mind tricks are another tool in her arsenal, and not many can beat her on the battlefield.
