A Ted Lasso star’s new R-rated movie is not scoring well with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Three years after the Ted Lasso season 3 finale, the series is returning for a fourth season, which will begin a new chapter as Ted (Jason Sudeikis) coaches AFC Richmond’s women’s team. Other familiar faces in the cast of characters include Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton, Juno Temple as Keeley Jones, Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent, Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins, and Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard.
Ahead of Ted Lasso season 4, Goldstein’s new movie, Office Romance, has been released on Netflix. He plays the role of Daniel Blanchflower, a private, hardworking lawyer with a family secret who finds himself falling for his boss, Jackie Cruz (Jennifer Lopez), the CEO of Air Cruz. Goldstein co-wrote the script with Joe Kelly, who also worked on Ted Lasso, and they both produced the film as well, which is directed by Ol Parker.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Office Romance has now debuted with a 58% Popcornmeter score. The score will likely fluctuate as more audience reviews are added, but as of this writing, it is “Rotten” per the aggregation site’s metrics, as 60% is the minimum needed for a “Fresh” designation. Many of the negative audience reviews take issue with the movie’s humor, the chemistry between Lopez and Goldstein, the story being predictable and formulaic, and for not living up to many of Lopez’s past romantic comedy movies.
With a Tomatometer score of 50%, the audience score is only slightly lower. However, ScreenRant‘s Office Romance review is overall quite positive, with Alex Harrison giving the movie seven out of 10 stars and writing that “my default state watching Office Romance was a giddy smile.” He acknowledges some problems with pacing and “the direction and image-making feel[ing] serviceable, when you’d hope they’d aim for special,” but feels that these elements do not stop the movie from being “delightful.”
In terms of audience scores, Office Romance is the lowest-rated project for Goldstein since The Nan Movie’s 55% rating in 2022. All of his other movies and shows since then have had a “Fresh” audience rating, including a “Verified Hot” 96% for the recent film The Sheep Detectives and 89% for Apple TV’s Shrinking season 2. Critical reception has been more mixed, as The Garfield Movie and At the Sea also have “Rotten” Tomatometer scores.
Along with Goldstein as Daniel and Lopez as Jackie, the Office Romance cast features Betty Gilpin as Jackie’s close friend and right-hand co-worker Sydney Bloom, Edward James Olmos as Jackie’s father and Air Cruz founder Captain Jack Cruz, Jodie Whittaker as Daniel’s sister Lizzy, Tony Hale as human resources manager Georger Dudek, Roger Bart as Falcon Airlines CEO William Butten, and Bradley Whitford as Peter Vance, the head of Air Cruz’s legal department.
Office Romance is Goldstein’s first project on Netflix after multiple seasons of Ted Lasso and Shrinking on Apple TV, along with the movie All of You. Goldstein is also a writer for Ted Lasso and is a co-creator, producer, and star of Shrinking, where he plays Louis, a character who is introduced in season 2 and returns in season 3. Season 4 is currently in the works, although it has not been confirmed whether Louis will be back.
Office Romance is now streaming on Netflix.
