Steven Spielberg Confirms A-List Star Turned Down Jurassic Park: ‘I Was Crushed’

The 1993 hit Jurassic Park remains one of Steven Spielberg’s most beloved movies, and fans would say that its casting was beyond perfect, making it impossible to imagine anyone else in the film’s lead roles. However, Spielberg originally had a certain Hollywood icon in mind for the role of Alan Grant, only to be told by the actor, “No thanks.”

Spielberg got to know Harrison Ford very well through their work together on the Indiana Jones movies. After the original trilogy, the director wanted to keep the collaboration going by offering Ford the role of Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. As Spielberg verifies in a new interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ford turned down the part, leaving the famed filmmaker feeling “crushed” at the time.

“Yes, he did,” Spielberg said when directly asked if Ford rejected Jurassic Park. “He may not remember that, but, I sure do! I wasn’t crossed, I was crushed. But, then Sam Neill became available, and he’s Alan Grant. Now that belongs to him.”

Spielberg isn’t wrong. Neill has since become synonymous with Grant, who is still one of the most popular characters of the franchise. After returning as one of the stars in 2001’s Jurassic Park III, Neill would revisit the role once again in 2022 for Jurassic World Dominion. He was one of a handful of legacy stars who returned for the film, joined by Jeff Goldblum (Ian Malcolm) and Laura Dern (Ellie Sattler). It was a part that Ford had no interest in, but over three decades later, it’s very clear that everything worked out for the best in the end.

Ford and Spielberg Later Reunited for More Indiana Jones Movies

Meanwhile, Spielberg would still get his chance to reunite with Ford. The actor returned as Indy in 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, giving Spielberg an opportunity to direct Ford once again. Though Ford revisited that role one last time for 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Spielberg handed over directing duties to James Mangold, though he was still involved with the project as an executive producer.

There’s always the chance that another future collaboration could happen, as Spielberg is still making movies. His newest directorial effort, the sci-fi drama Disclosure Day, has just debuted in movie theaters. The 79-year-old director also has other projects in the works, as he’s made it clear that he has no intentions of retiring anytime soon. He recently teased that he is developing a Western, and perhaps that movie will have a role for Ford to take on.

Ford, 83, is finished with Indiana Jones, as he previously confirmed. However, he is also continuing to work in Hollywood, which keeps the door open for a possible collaboration with Spielberg. He last appeared on the big screen in 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World, and he currently stars in the Apple TV series Shrinking.
