The longest-lasting asymmetrical multiplayer horror game, Dead by Daylight, is still going strong after ten straight years. In honor of celebrating its tenth anniversary this month, the game has been made free to play for Steam users for a limited time.
As of now, Dead by Daylight can be downloaded and played for free via Steam. It’s part of a special promotion that expires on June 22, at which point gamers will need to purchase the game to keep the fun going. However, the full game is being offered at a steep discount, down 60% to a limited-time price of just $7.99. This deal will expire on June 25, giving players time to check it out for free first to see if they want to pick it up at its discounted price at the end of the promotional period.
Jason Voorhees Has Joined Dead by Daylight
The latest DLC for Dead by Daylight also just went live. It adds Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th franchise as a playable killer, something many fans have been hoping to see happen for many years. Playing as Jason does require purchasing the DLC, but there’s a bundle with the killer included that’s also on sale. The “Jason Edition” pack includes both the base game and the Dead by Daylight: Jason DLC, and it’s marked off by nearly 50% with a sale price of $11.68.
The core concept of Dead by Daylight is a multiplayer experience that pits one killer against four survivors. As the killer, the player’s goal is to hunt down and sacrifice victims to a higher being known as The Entity. Survivors are tasked with repairing five generators scattered across the map to power up exit doors if they want to escape. It creates a tension that’s reminiscent of the horror movies that inspired the game.
Familiar Characters Are Constantly Joining the Fog
Part of the appeal of Dead by Daylight, which has contributed to its ongoing success, has been the consistent additions of familiar horror characters. A variety of the horror genre’s most popular villains have been made playable as killers in the game, including names like Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Chucky, Michael Myers, Ghost Face, Vecna, and more. On the other side, horror heroes like Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams and Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley have also joined the lineup as playable survivors.
The franchise will also be further expanding with plans to transition to the big screen. A feature film adaptation is in development from Blumhouse Atomic Monster, which has already found success with the Five Nights at Freddy’s movies. It was just revealed this month, also as part of the tenth anniversary celebration, that Icelandic filmmaker Thordur Palsson has been tapped to direct the movie.
