Of all the superheroes out there, Spider-Man has one of the proudest legacies in the world of video games, alongside the Caped Crusader in recent times. Swinging through city blocks really was an experience made for gamers, and the sheen of that really hasn’t worn off over the course of several decades.
Everyone likely has their own favorites, whether it’s the classic titles of the PlayStation’s early days, or the more recent Marvel’s Spider-Man series. One of the other titles that fans remember fondly is Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, with the only major problem being that it has been unplayable for almost a decade.
If you were or are a fan, though, it’s back in a big way, thanks to fans working hard to preserve gaming history.
Over on Twitter/X, the user Stormslayer shared a post confirming that they had successfully created an updated and playable version of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions that runs well on modern PCs and is even Steam Deck compatible for those who like to game on the go.
The original run of the game came to something of an end when it was removed from both the PlayStation and Xbox stores following the expiration of Activision’s existing licensing deal with Marvel in 2015. The game was released on Steam after that, before again being removed, never to return, in 2017.
The game is essentially abandonware at this point, and it had every chance of fading from existence very soon indeed. Happily, there are good folks out there who work consistently to preserve games, and this latest target makes a download available for everyone to experience.
Downloads for the game have been available online for a little while at this point, but this latest version comes with some important technical changes that make the game considerably more playable on modern hardware. That compatibility is the key, with many abandonware games technically being preserved, while at the same time not being super playable.
If you’ve never given it a go before, it really is one of the most underrated games in the series, and it’s well worth returning to if you’re an existing fan of the franchise.
The download link for the game is available via the original post on social media, and it clocks in at around 6.5GB for those of you who might need to free up space. This also potentially opens up Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions to the skills of modders, so we could see some really exciting projects related to the game over the next few years.
